Spotify is testing a new way to make Premium feel more exclusive in India. Its new Premium Early Access programme gives eligible subscribers access to selected new releases up to three days before they become available to everyone else.
The feature is launching with selected artists and labels, with Universal Music Group among the first partners through its “Hear It First” campaign. Spotify says participating releases will eventually become available to all listeners once the early-access window ends.
Premium becomes an advantage for new music
The concept is simple: a song can be released to a participating Premium audience first, then move into general availability after the early window.
Spotify says the programme does not permanently place new music behind a paywall. Instead, it creates a short period in which Premium listeners get first access.
Labels now have another release strategy
For artists and labels, the change creates another promotional tool around release day.
A three-day head start can be used to build early streams, encourage social conversation and create a sense of event around a release. It also gives a label another way to connect the value of a Premium subscription with music discovery rather than only with ad-free listening or additional playback features.
Not every release will get early access
Spotify’s programme is selective. Only releases where artists and labels collaborate with Spotify to participate receive the early window.
That means early access is likely to become part of campaign planning rather than a universal release setting. Labels can decide whether the additional Premium exposure is worth building into a launch strategy.
Why India matters
India is one of the most important and competitive music markets in the world, with a large streaming audience and a release ecosystem that spans local stars, independent artists and global labels.
Launching Premium Early Access there gives Spotify a substantial market in which to test whether early listening can become a meaningful subscription benefit.
What it could mean for future releases
If the model performs well, artists may increasingly see release timing as a strategic choice rather than a single global date. A short Premium window could sit alongside pre-saves, social campaigns, creator content and playlist pitching.
For now, the programme is limited to participating releases in India. But the experiment is worth watching because it could change how streaming platforms package the first few days of a song’s life.
