What’s New in MK2?
MK2 introduces several improvements over its predecessor:
- Enhanced VCA-style behavior — More punch and firmness in compression, which helps when you want more control over dynamics. (Patreon)
- Improved transient handling — Sharper attack on transients, preserving punch when drums or percussive elements hit. (Patreon)
- New attack/release curves — For more musical response; gives you flexibility in how fast or slow the compression reacts. (Patreon)
- New factory presets — Ready-made settings to get you started, save time, helpful for those who don’t want to tweak everything from scratch. (Patreon)
- Refined UI and CPU optimization — Polished user interface and more efficient performance, which means less tax on your system. (Patreon)
Use Cases: When Silver Fox MK2 Shines
Here are situations where this compressor can become your go-to:
- For drums / percussive elements, where you want tight control and punch.
- On vocals, especially if you want clarity while maintaining presence.
- On the mix bus / master chain when you need to glue the mix together without squashing it too much.
- Whenever you need flexible attack/release to shape dynamics in a musical, responsive way.
Strengths & Potential Trade-Offs
| ✅ Strengths | ⚠️ Possible Limitations |
|---|---|
| Free to download (even on free Patreon tier) (Patreon) | Might not have as many advanced features (side-chain, mid/side, etc.) as high-end paid compressors |
| VCA-style gives more punch / control than some smoother opto- or tube-style comps when needed | Depending on the mix, VCA’s firmness might not always suit soft or very dynamic material |
| Good presets to get you started | UI polish helps but may still have room for more UX refinement depending on workflow |
| CPU optimized | Could still be heavier than minimalist comps depending on settings / burst loads |
How It Compares (Quick Impression vs Other Compressors)
While I haven’t done a full A/B in every context, here are some gut-impressions comparing Silver Fox MK2 with typical alternatives:
- Compared to a vintage opto compressor: Silver Fox MK2 is more aggressive, more responsive, less “smooth & creamy.” If you want warmth and saturation, opto/tube emulation will win; but if you want clarity and punch, VCA (like MK2) is often better.
- Compared to other free compressors: MK2 seems to stand out with good attack/release flexibility and presets, plus efficient CPU usage. Many freebies sacrifice one or more of those.
- Compared to the HA2A (from HoRNet): HA2A gives more analog coloration (tube, transformer emulation, opto vibe) and more modes (mid/side, linked channels, etc.). MK2 seems more straightforward, focused on VCA-type dynamics. Depending on what you’re going for, you might even use both in different parts of a mix.
How to Get Silver Fox MK2 & Tips for Using It
- Go to the SILVER FOX : MK2 post by Lotus Sound Audio on Patreon. (Patreon)
- Download the version matching your OS: Windows x64 or macOS. (Patreon)
- Install like a usual VST/AU plugin.
- Start with a factory preset close to your source (drums, vocals, mix bus) and tweak attack/release to taste.
- Use moderate compression first; VCA style can be unforgiving if pushed too hard.
- Use in series: e.g. mild compression early, stronger later, as needed. Also try blending wet/dry if available to retain dynamics.
