Vintage Drum Machines at Your Fingertips
What Is It?
XoX Drums (also called XoX Box) is a free drum-machine-style instrument for Kontakt. It brings together sounds inspired by classic Roland drum machines like the TR-606, TR-707, TR-808, and TR-909. With multiple drum slots and a wide variety of samples, it lets you mix and match kicks, snares, hats, cymbals, and toms from those iconic machines all in one place.
Key Features
- Five drum slots: Kicks; Snare/Rim/Clap; Hats (closed, open, pedal); Cymbal/Cowbell; Toms (Hi, Mid, Low).
- A large selection of sounds: dozens of kicks and snares, several hat combinations, cymbals, toms, etc.
- Controls per slot: level, panning, tuning, attack & sustain shaping, filters, distortion, reverb send.
- Solo and mute options on each slot, to isolate or blend elements.
- Pattern sequencing features and multi-output support for more complex routing in your DAW.
Requirements & Limitations
- Requires full version of Kontakt 5.6 or newer. Does not run in the free Kontakt Player beyond demo/limited function in many cases.
- Because it’s sample-based and contains many sound sources, it can use non-trivial memory or CPU depending on your setup.
- No round-robin for repeated hits, so fast repeating might feel a bit static.

Why It’s Worth It
If you need classic drum machine flavor — 808 kick, 909 snare, crunchy rims, etc. — this is a strong free option. It’s flexible, layered, and gives you a lot of tonal variety with control. Great for electronic, hip-hop, synthwave, retro, soundtrack, or just adding a throwback vibe to modern tracks.
Final Thoughts
Autodafe XoX Drums is more than just samples; it’s a mini-drum machine in software form. For producers who want vintage drum tones with editing flexibility, this instrument delivers. If you own Kontakt, it’s easy to grab and integrate into your setup.
