Dexed is a free, open-source FM synthesizer closely modeled on the Yamaha DX7. It works both as a software instrument and as a practical librarian/editor for real DX7 hardware, making classic six-operator FM programming far more accessible inside a modern DAW.

A free route into classic DX7-style FM

FM synthesis can look intimidating because the sound is built from operators that modulate one another rather than from the oscillator-to-filter path used in a typical subtractive synth. Dexed helps by exposing the DX7-style parameters on one main interface. You can see operator envelopes, frequency relationships, algorithm selection, feedback, LFO controls and global settings without constantly navigating hardware menus.

The project is deliberately close to the original DX7 architecture. That makes Dexed useful not only for creating new sounds but also for loading and managing DX7 SysEx data. If you own the hardware, Dexed can act as a companion editor and cartridge librarian. If you do not, it still provides a flexible FM instrument for bells, electric keys, metallic percussion, digital basses and evolving textures.

Practical tip: When learning FM, mute most operators and build the patch in pairs. First create a carrier you can hear, then raise one modulator slowly. It is much easier to understand the tone change than editing all six operators at once.

A Producer’s Take

Dexed is one of the best free ways to understand why FM can sound so different from subtractive synthesis. I like it most for bright keys, metallic attacks and basses that need definition without taking over the whole mix.
