SoundCloud Lets Artists Sell Music Directly to Fans With Zero Commission

SoundCloud has begun testing direct music purchases, allowing selected Artist Pro creators to sell downloads from their profiles without SoundCloud taking a commission on the sale.

SoundCloud is testing a new direct-sales model that could give independent artists another way to earn from their music without sending fans to a separate store. The platform has opened a beta that lets a select group of Artist Pro creators sell music directly from their SoundCloud profiles.

According to SoundCloud, the platform will take zero commission on these purchases. Artists receive the proceeds from each sale after applicable fees and taxes, while fans can find, buy and download the music without leaving SoundCloud.

A different approach to music monetization

Most streaming services are built around subscriptions, advertising and royalty payments generated by listening. SoundCloud is adding another layer by turning the artist profile itself into a potential point of sale.

The idea is particularly relevant to independent musicians who already use SoundCloud as a place to build an audience. Rather than moving a listener from a profile to another storefront, the purchase can happen inside the same ecosystem.

SoundCloud says artists keep the sale revenue

The company says it will not take a commission from the transaction. Standard fees and taxes can still apply, but the core platform commission is set at zero.

This distinction matters for smaller artists because direct digital sales can offer different economics from streaming. A single purchase can also create a more direct relationship between the listener and the artist.

Why the beta is important for independent artists

SoundCloud has long positioned itself as a platform where emerging artists can find their first audiences. Direct purchasing extends that role from discovery and streaming toward commerce.

For artists with dedicated fans, this could create a useful alternative to relying entirely on streaming volume. It could also support limited releases, premium downloads or other direct-to-fan strategies in the future.

A test rather than a universal release option

The feature is currently limited to a select group of Artist Pro creators, so it is not yet a universal SoundCloud sales tool. The beta will show whether listeners are willing to buy music directly inside a streaming platform.

If the model gains traction, SoundCloud could have a new way to differentiate its artist ecosystem while giving independent musicians another revenue channel.
