Tyrell N6 is u-he’s free virtual-analogue synthesizer, built around a compact subtractive layout with two oscillators, ring modulation, a characterful filter, unison, modulation and chorus. The current 3.0.0 beta modernizes the classic freeware instrument for today’s systems while keeping the fast, single-panel workflow that made it popular.

Why Tyrell N6 is still worth downloading

Tyrell N6 comes from an unusual origin story. The synth began as a community hardware concept developed with Amazona, then evolved into software when u-he provided the synth engine. That history explains the design: instead of presenting hundreds of pages and hidden tabs, Tyrell keeps the important synthesis controls visible and encourages quick sound design.

The instrument uses two oscillators plus noise and ring modulation, a mixer with overdrive and filter feedback, a twin filter related to an early Diva model, two LFOs, loopable envelopes, a compact modulation matrix and three chorus modes. There is also unison for up to eight voices and a large factory library with more than 580 presets.

Practical tip: Start with one oscillator and the filter before switching on unison. Tyrell can become very wide very quickly, so building the patch in mono first often makes basses and leads easier to place in a dense mix.

Basses
Use oscillator detune, filter feedback and envelope movement for solid analogue-style low end.
Leads and plucks
The envelopes, ring modulation and chorus make bright, animated patches quick to build.
Pads
Unison, slow modulation and the chorus section can create wide sustained textures without a complicated routing page.
Learning synthesis
The mostly single-panel design makes signal flow easier to understand than many larger modern synths.

What changed in the current version

u-he’s 2025 beta brings Tyrell N6 up to date with improved VST3 support, CLAP support, native Apple Silicon support, a modern preset browser, better interface performance, more GUI scaling options, MTS-ESP microtuning and an updated factory library. It remains a genuinely free download and does not require a serial number.

Quick start

  1. Load an init or simple preset and keep oscillator 1 active.
  2. Set the filter cutoff and resonance before adding modulation.
  3. Use the filter envelope for plucks or bass movement.
  4. Add oscillator 2 for detune, intervals or ring-modulated tones.
  5. Finish with a small amount of unison or chorus instead of widening everything at once.
Why it stands out: Tyrell N6 is not trying to compete by offering the longest feature list. Its strength is speed. The architecture is deep enough for serious patches, but compact enough that you can understand what is happening without opening multiple modulation pages.

A Producer’s Take

What I like about Tyrell N6 is how quickly it gets to a convincing analogue-flavoured patch without hiding the modulation. For basses, plucks and slightly unstable leads, the focused layout can be more inspiring than browsing through a huge multi-page synth.
