An Organic, Tuned Percussion Kontakt Instrument
The Neolithic Instruments Lithophone is a beautifully crafted free Kontakt instrument that brings the unique sound of a lithophone directly into your DAW. Designed for Kontakt 8.2.0+, this instrument captures the distinctive, bright tones of carboniferous limestone bars, offering a unique texture that complements both organic and experimental music production.
The Origins of the Lithophone
This remarkable instrument is based on a physical lithophone built by instrument maker Bobbie Millar in 2018. The stone bars, made from carboniferous limestone sourced from Horton Quarry in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, UK, produce a sound that is both resonant and clear. Housed at the Horton-in-Ribblesdale train station, the lithophone is accessible to the public, inviting musicians and enthusiasts to explore its acoustic beauty.
Meticulous Sampling Process
To accurately capture the rich tones of this unique instrument, individual samples were recorded from each note across two octaves. The recording process involved:
- Using a high-quality AKG C414 condenser microphone to capture the full frequency range.
- Recording each note at six different velocities to ensure dynamic expression.
- Utilizing two round-robin variations per note to enhance realism and natural playback.
- Including two distinct beater articulations:
- Rubber Beater: Delivers a bright and clear tone, ideal for percussive accents.
- Yarn Beater: Produces a softer, warmer sound, adding gentle harmonic layers.
Sound Design and Flexibility
The sampled sounds were meticulously edited and mapped into Kontakt, allowing users to effortlessly integrate them into their projects. The Kontakt interface includes optional FX controls, offering creative flexibility. To demonstrate the instrument’s potential, six carefully designed presets are included, showcasing the diverse tonal possibilities of the lithophone.
