April Afternoon is a Dutch new wave project by Amsterdam-based producer and musician Jelmer Luimstra. This project brings a fresh yet nostalgic touch to the music scene, with a distinct sound that resonates deeply with fans of new wave and dark wave genres.April Afternoon released its debut EP, titled « Words, » in late June 2024. This EP features a variety of dark wave compositions, enriched with multiple choirs. « Words » includes three singles: « I’m Going Back, » « Modern Lovers, » and « The Chorus, » along with a brand new track: « Walking Through Your Day. » The latter is a darker piece that draws inspiration from the EBM (Electronic Body Music) sound.The project first gained attention with the release of its single « Danse des Animaux » in the summer of 2023. This French but primarily instrumental track draws inspiration from synth and new wave music, showcasing Jelmer Luimstra’s ability to blend different influences seamlessly.
The name « April Afternoon » references a highly experimental ’80s song by the Dutch underground pop group Kiem, serving as a reminder to avoid making compromises in art.
