CRB Uranus 1 VST: A Rare Italian Vintage Synth Reborn for Free
A free VST3 recreation of one of the rarest Italian synthesizers of the 1970s, complete with eight oscillators and vintage analog character.
CRB Uranus 1 VST brings an exceptionally rare piece of Italian synthesizer history back to life as a completely free virtual instrument.
Created by Marcello Colò and Marco Molendi and released through SM Strumenti Musicali, the plugin recreates the huge CRB Elettronica Uranus 1 synthesizer from the 1970s.
Only five original hardware units were reportedly produced, making the software version an unusual opportunity to explore an instrument that most musicians have never seen, let alone played.

A Synthesizer Almost Nobody Has Played
The original CRB Uranus 1 was developed by Italian manufacturer CRB Elettronica during the 1970s.
It was an ambitious instrument with a massive control panel, eight oscillators and a symmetrical architecture designed to provide different sounds across the keyboard.
According to the developers, only five units were produced.
This makes Uranus 1 considerably rarer than the classic Moog, ARP, Roland or Sequential synthesizers that dominate the software emulation market.

Eight Oscillators and a Huge Control Panel
The software recreation retains the imposing architecture of the original instrument.
The synth provides eight oscillators alongside multiple filter, amplifier and modulation sections.
The interface is mirrored across the left and right sides, reflecting the unusual design philosophy of the original hardware.
This allows producers to create layered and contrasting sounds within a single instrument.
Vintage Sound Character
CRB Uranus 1 is particularly suited to producers looking for:
- Vintage analog pads
- Retro leads
- Electronic basses
- Experimental textures
- Drone sounds
- Synthwave
- Italo Disco
- Cinematic electronic music
A Built-In Rhythm Section
The virtual Uranus also recreates the rhythm section found in the original hardware.
This makes it possible to combine synthesized melodic material with simple rhythmic elements directly inside the instrument.
The unusual combination reflects an era when manufacturers were still experimenting with what an electronic keyboard could become.

10 Programmable Presets
The original hardware predates modern preset management, but the software version adds 10 programmable memories.
The installer also includes preset examples and documentation designed to help users understand the unusual architecture.
For such a large synth, starting from a preset can make exploration considerably easier.
Production Ideas
Synthwave: Use slow pads with chorus, delay and vintage reverb.
Italo Disco: Create bright analog chords and simple sequenced basslines.
Ambient: Use long envelopes and modulation to build evolving textures.
Cinematic: Layer unstable analog tones underneath modern orchestral or electronic sounds.
A Genuine Piece of Italian Synth History
One of the main reasons to download CRB Uranus 1 is simply that it sounds and behaves differently from the usual virtual analog instruments.
Its design comes from a period when synthesizer manufacturers had not yet settled on standardized layouts or workflows.
That makes the instrument interesting both as a production tool and as a playable piece of electronic music history.

Is CRB Uranus 1 Worth Downloading?
Yes, particularly if your plugin folder already contains plenty of conventional analog synth emulations.
CRB Uranus 1 offers a much less familiar architecture and recreates an instrument that was virtually inaccessible even when it originally existed.
The combination of eight oscillators, multiple synthesis sections, vintage character and a built-in rhythm section gives producers plenty of material for experimentation.
