Saturation with three musical decisions

Ispín by Wild Surmise is a free saturation plugin for macOS, Windows and iOS. Instead of presenting a long list of circuit models, it reduces the process to three main tone controls: Richness, Colour and Roughness, followed by output level.

The result is a compact tool for adding density, harmonic colour and edge to individual tracks or buses without turning saturation into a laboratory exercise.

How the controls shape the sound

Richness controls the overall amount of harmonic enhancement and is the natural place to start. Colour changes the tonal emphasis of the saturation, while Roughness pushes the character toward a more obvious and textured response. Output then compensates the final level.

That separation is useful because it lets you distinguish between “more saturation” and “a different kind of saturation.” A source can become warmer and denser without necessarily becoming abrasive, or Roughness can be pushed deliberately when the mix needs more bite.

Try it in the browser first

Wild Surmise provides an interactive WebAssembly version directly on the official Ispín page. You can audition the basic workflow in a browser before installing the desktop plugin, which is an unusually convenient way to decide whether the character suits your material.

Where Ispín fits

  • Bass: add harmonics that help the part remain audible on smaller playback systems.
  • Drums: increase density and attack character on individual hits or a drum bus.
  • Vocals: use moderate Richness for presence or more Roughness for an intentionally stressed texture.
  • Synths: soften very clean digital tones or push them toward a more aggressive edge.
  • Mix buses: use small amounts and output matching for subtle harmonic cohesion.

A useful way to dial it in

  1. Start with Roughness low and raise Richness until the source feels denser.
  2. Move Colour while listening in the full mix rather than in solo.
  3. Add Roughness only if the source needs extra texture or urgency.
  4. Use Output to match the bypassed level before judging the result.

Why Ispín is worth trying

Ispín is appealing because the interface describes musical outcomes instead of technical topology. Richness, Colour and Roughness are easy to understand by ear, so the plugin encourages fast decisions and level-matched comparison rather than endless model switching.

The desktop and mobile support is another bonus, especially for producers who move between a main DAW and iPad-based sessions. The free browser demo makes the barrier to trying it essentially zero.
