RumbleRoom by bdEnergy: Free Ambient Delay and Smart Ducker
RumbleRoom by bdEnergy is a free ambient delay and echo processor created for the KVR Developer Challenge. Its personality comes from combining dark analog-style colour, a diffusion network and dynamic ducking so repeats can feel large without constantly fighting the dry signal.
More Echo Chamber Than Utility Delay
RumbleRoom is designed to create a space around the source rather than simply repeat it. Delay times can move from extremely short values into long ambient territory, while diffusion smears individual echoes into a denser wash.
At restrained settings it can add depth behind a vocal or synth. Push the feedback and diffusion further and it starts behaving like a hybrid between a tape echo and an ambient reverb.
Built-In Ducking Keeps the Dry Signal Clear
The dynamic ducking stage is one of the most useful parts of the design. When the source is active, the wet effect can move backward; as the source relaxes, the echo chamber rises into the space. This creates the familiar vocal-delay trick without requiring separate sidechain routing.
For lead synths and melodic percussion, the same behavior can keep attacks clear while allowing long tails between phrases.
From Tape Warmth to Huge Ambient Washes
The effect can produce darker, saturated echoes or smoother diffuse clouds depending on how hard it is driven. That makes it suitable for ambient, dub, cinematic music, synthwave and electronic production where delay is expected to become part of the texture rather than remain invisible.
Open Source and Free
RumbleRoom is free and open source under GPL-3.0. Version 1.0.1 is available for Windows and macOS in VST3 and Audio Unit formats. The update also addressed macOS notarization behavior, making the current build preferable to the first release.
A Strong Send Effect
Although RumbleRoom works directly as an insert, it is particularly effective on an auxiliary send. That approach lets several tracks share one dark atmospheric space, while the built-in ducking and wet control keep the effect manageable inside a dense arrangement.

Final Thoughts
RumbleRoom is a creative free delay that solves a practical mixing problem at the same time. The dark diffusion gives it personality, while the built-in ducking helps those long echoes stay behind the source until there is room for them to bloom.
