Free Clip 2: A Free Mastering Clipper VST for Clean, Loud Masters
Transparent peak control, multiple clipping curves and up to 32x oversampling inside a completely free mastering-ready plugin.
Venn Audio Free Clip 2 is a free clipping plugin designed for producers and mastering engineers who want more loudness without immediately forcing a limiter to handle every transient.
Part of the completely free Venn Audio Free Suite, Free Clip 2 can be used on individual tracks, drum buses and the master channel to shave fast peaks before the final limiting stage.
The plugin is available without registration and supports modern plugin formats on Windows, macOS and Linux.

Why Use a Clipper During Mastering?
A clipper and a limiter perform related but different jobs.
A limiter dynamically turns peaks down when they approach a ceiling. A clipper instead reshapes peaks that cross its threshold.
Used carefully, this can remove very short transient spikes before the signal reaches the final limiter.
The limiter then has less work to do, which can help preserve punch while still increasing the overall loudness of the master.
Simple Mastering Workflow
Try placing Free Clip 2 before your final limiter.
Start by clipping only the loudest transient peaks, often around 1 or 2 dB rather than immediately pushing the plugin aggressively.
Then let the limiter handle the remaining loudness and final output ceiling.
Multiple Clipping Curves
Free Clip 2 provides several clipping characteristics, allowing the processor to move between relatively transparent peak shaving and more obvious saturation.
A hard clipping curve is useful when the goal is simply controlling very fast peaks.
Softer curves gradually round the waveform as it approaches the ceiling, introducing more harmonic coloration.
This makes the plugin useful not only for mastering but also for drum buses, basses and individual sounds that benefit from additional density.
Venn Audio Free Suite 1.5
Venn Audio presents the latest version of its completely free plugin collection, including Free Clip 2.
Up to 32x Oversampling
Clipping is a nonlinear process, which means aggressive settings can introduce aliasing at higher frequencies.
Free Clip 2 includes oversampling to reduce these unwanted artifacts.
Higher oversampling settings require more CPU power, so producers can use a lighter configuration while mixing and increase the quality before the final render.
For mastering work, this is particularly useful when clipping bright or transient-heavy material.
Visual Feedback Makes Clipping Easier
Free Clip 2 provides a waveform display that makes it easy to see where the incoming signal crosses the clipping threshold.
This visual feedback can help producers understand exactly how aggressively the signal is being processed.
The interface is also resizable, making the plugin comfortable to use on different screen sizes and high-resolution studio monitors.

Free Meter Makes a Great Companion
Free Clip 2 is part of Venn Audio’s wider Free Suite, which also includes Free Meter.
Free Meter provides useful mastering information including peak, true peak, RMS and LUFS measurements.
This means you can use Free Clip 2 for peak control while monitoring the final master with another free plugin from the same collection.
That is a considerably better mastering strategy than simply turning the limiter down until the waveform begins to resemble a kitchen worktop.
Free Compressor Is Included Too
The Free Suite also provides Free Comp, giving producers another useful dynamics processor for mix-bus and mastering work.
A light amount of compression before clipping can help control broader dynamic movement, while Free Clip 2 handles the fastest transient peaks.
Used carefully, the two processors can complement each other without destroying the natural punch of the mix.

A Useful Free Mastering Chain
If you want to build a simple mastering chain using freeware, a practical starting point could be:
- Clean EQ for small tonal corrections
- Light bus compression if required
- Free Clip 2 for transient peak control
- Final brickwall limiter
- Free Meter for LUFS and True Peak monitoring
The important point is not to use every processor simply because it is available.
If the mix already sounds balanced, fewer mastering moves are usually better.
Where Free Clip 2 Works Best
- Master bus peak control
- Pre-limiter clipping
- Drum bus loudness
- Kick transient control
- Electronic music mastering
- EDM and House mastering
- Bass-heavy productions
- Creative saturation
Updated as Part of Free Suite 1.5
Venn Audio released a major update to its Free Suite in July 2026.
The update introduced a redesigned interface, a rewritten back end for improved performance and stability, as well as several additional free plugins.
Free Clip 2 remains one of the most useful processors in the collection, particularly for producers interested in modern loudness and mastering workflows.

Is Free Clip 2 Worth Downloading?
Yes, especially if you produce House, EDM, Techno, Hip-Hop or other genres where transient control and loudness are important.
Free Clip 2 provides the essential controls required for mastering-style clipping without forcing producers into an oversized interface or a paid subscription.
The addition of oversampling and clear waveform feedback also makes it suitable for more precise work than a basic stock soft clipper.
For a completely free plugin, it is a serious tool for the final stages of a mix.
