What Is Altitude?

Altitude is a hybrid synthesis workstation developed by nakst. It combines subtractive synthesis, sample playback and flexible frequency modulation inside a single instrument.

The sound engine contains eight generators. Four are virtual analog oscillators, while the other four are sample-based layers. These elements can be stacked, detuned, mapped across the keyboard and routed through different filters and modulation sources.

Producers can begin with one of the included factory patches, reshape an existing sound or build a new instrument from an initialized preset. This makes Altitude accessible for quick production while still offering enough depth for detailed sound design.

Altitude begins with four virtual analog oscillators equipped with waveform, phase, tuning, stereo detuning, unison and FM routing controls. They can generate short plucks, smooth leads, deep basses, wide pads and more aggressive electronic textures.

The four additional layers use samples from the internal factory library. Producers can adjust their pitch, stereo spread, looping and playback position. Custom WAV files can also be imported, opening the door to personal recordings, tuned percussion, vocal textures and organic source material.

Combining synthesized oscillators with samples gives each patch more depth. A clean pluck can be layered with a softer texture, while an electronic bass can gain weight and character from a tuned sample layer.

Why Altitude Works for Afrobeat and Afropop

Altitude is not a dedicated collection of traditional African instruments. It does not replace realistic guitars, kalimbas, brass sections or acoustic percussion. Its strength lies in the electronic layers that often accompany modern Afrobeat and Afropop arrangements.

Short pluck sounds can be shaped into light repeating melodies that leave space for vocals, guitars and percussion. Filter envelopes provide precise control over the attack and decay, while stereo and unison settings can add width without overwhelming the groove.

The bass engine can produce rounded sub tones, warm mid-bass layers and moving rhythmic sequences. These sounds can support Afro House productions or complement an Amapiano-inspired log drum without trying to replace it.

Altitude also performs well for atmospheric pads, bright leads and secondary melodies. Its sample layers are particularly useful for producers who want to introduce their own organic sounds and process them alongside synthetic oscillators.

Dual Sequencers and Rhythmic Movement

The instrument contains two independent 24-step sequencers with integrated arpeggiators. Individual tracks can use different lengths, allowing producers to create evolving patterns and subtle polyrhythmic movement.

Pitch values can be restricted to a musical scale, while selected parameters can be randomized. This system works particularly well for melodic ostinatos, repeating pluck phrases and secondary rhythmic elements built around the main drum groove.

A simple three-note motif can develop through changes in velocity, gate length and modulation while remaining musically coherent.

Filters, Modulation and Effects

Altitude includes two filters with 15 algorithms. They can be configured in series, parallel, split or intermediate routing modes, providing both conventional filtering and more characterful resonant responses.

The modulation system includes five envelopes, four LFOs, two step modulators, four mathematical modulators and a 21-slot modulation matrix. Four macro controls are arranged as two XY pads and can be assigned to important parameters for performance and automation.

Seventeen effect types can be loaded across eight slots. The available processors include reverb, phaser, delay and bitcrushing. The effect slots are divided into two chains that can operate in series or parallel.

Installation and Compatibility

Altitude is available for Windows, macOS and Linux. Windows users can install the CLAP edition, the native FL Studio version or the standalone application. macOS users receive CLAP, Audio Unit and standalone formats, while Linux users can install CLAP or standalone editions.

Kontakt is not required. The developer does not use licence keys, online activation or copy protection. Separate downloadable archives are provided for each supported operating system.

Altitude is an unusually complete free synthesizer. Its combination of virtual analog oscillators, sample layers, FM routing, sequencers, modulation and effects offers enough flexibility to build complete melodic palettes instead of relying on a small collection of fixed presets.

For Afrobeat, Afropop and Afro House, its strongest roles are synthetic plucks, warm basses, pads, leads, counter-melodies and evolving sequences.
