The Deer, the Fox and the Guitar: A Free Kontakt Guitar Library

A soft nylon guitar, expressive articulations and cinematic sound-design tools for the free Kontakt Player.

The Deer, the Fox and the Guitar is a free nylon-string guitar library developed by Wavelet Audio in collaboration with composer and sound designer Dima Koltsov.

Designed for the free Kontakt Player, the instrument focuses on soft fingerstyle tones, natural performance details and processed cinematic textures. It can move from an intimate classical guitar sound to ambient pads, melodic layers and more experimental presets without requiring a paid Kontakt licence.

This is not a time-limited demo or a handful of promotional samples. Wavelet Audio presents it as a complete free instrument with its own engine, playable articulations, dynamic layers, round robins, effects and factory snapshots.

What Is Included?

The library is based on recordings of a nylon-string classical guitar performed by Alexander Buzhak. Its natural tone is gentle and controlled, making it suitable for emotional arrangements that need a guitar without the aggressive attack of steel strings.

  • Three playable articulations for different melodic and textural roles.
  • Legato slides for smoother transitions between connected notes.
  • Four dynamic layers that respond to playing intensity.
  • Four round robins with alternating down and up performances.
  • Factory snapshots covering natural, cinematic, ambient and processed sounds.
  • Integrated effects rack for shaping the guitar inside Kontakt.
  • 24-bit, 48 kHz samples stored in Kontakt’s lossless NCW format.

The installed library requires approximately 413 MB of storage, compressed from around 633 MB of original sample material.

More Than a Basic Nylon Guitar

The central guitar sound is deliberately intimate. It works well for exposed melodies, restrained chord progressions and arrangements inspired by narrative games, independent films and acoustic cinematic music.

The instrument becomes more unusual when its snapshots and sound-design controls are introduced. Wavelet Audio has used the original guitar recordings to create atmospheric, melodic and cinematic presets that move beyond a conventional sampled guitar.

Some patches preserve the soft acoustic identity of the source, while others transform it into pads, wide textures and heavily processed layers. This makes the library useful even when a production does not need an obviously recognisable guitar part.

The combination of a realistic source instrument and creative processing also makes it suitable for hybrid arrangements. A natural guitar melody can be layered with one of the more atmospheric snapshots to create depth without loading an unrelated synthesizer.

Best Uses

Cinematic and game music are obvious applications. The soft attack leaves room for dialogue, sound effects and orchestral layers, while the processed presets can provide emotional backgrounds and atmospheric transitions.

For ambient and post-classical music, sustained notes can be combined with long reverbs and delays to create delicate soundscapes. The natural performance variations help prevent repeated notes from sounding mechanically identical.

The instrument can also work in Lo-Fi, Indie Pop and acoustic electronic music. A simple progression played quietly can provide a more organic foundation than another heavily filtered keyboard loop.

House and electronic producers can use short guitar phrases inside breakdowns, introductions and melodic hooks. Record the performance as audio, then chop, reverse or pitch individual notes to create custom samples.

How to Build a Natural Performance

Realistic sampled guitar programming depends on phrasing rather than chord complexity. Avoid placing every note at exactly the same velocity and duration. Small differences between notes can make a MIDI performance feel considerably more human.

Use the dynamic layers to shape complete phrases. Lower values are useful for intimate passages, while stronger notes can define the beginning of a new section or emphasise a melodic peak.

Legato slides should be used selectively. They can make connected melodies feel more expressive, but adding a slide between every note will quickly sound artificial. Reserve them for transitions where a guitarist would naturally move between positions.

Leave small gaps between some notes and allow others to overlap slightly. A convincing performance often contains both connected and separated articulation rather than one fixed MIDI length across the entire passage.

Mixing and Production Tips

The library has a naturally soft tone, but its lower mids may still compete with piano, pads or orchestral strings. A gentle high-pass filter can remove unnecessary low frequencies without making the guitar sound thin.

When the guitar carries the main melody, use a short room or plate reverb to create space while preserving definition. Longer reverbs are better suited to ambient presets or background layers.

Avoid excessive stereo widening on the natural guitar sound. A focused centre position often feels more realistic, particularly when the instrument is supporting vocals or a solo orchestral part.

For a wider arrangement, record two slightly different performances and pan them in opposite directions. Duplicating the same MIDI and delaying one side usually creates phase problems rather than a convincing double tracking effect.

The processed snapshots can also be resampled. Record long notes or chords, bounce them to audio and edit the most interesting sections. This can turn the library into a source of pads, reversed transitions and custom textures.

Compatibility and Installation

The Deer, the Fox and the Guitar requires Kontakt Player 8.1 or later. The full paid version of Kontakt is not required.

The library is compatible with Native Instruments’ NKS system and can be used with supported Komplete Kontrol hardware. It requires online registration through Native Access before it appears in the Kontakt library browser.

Kontakt Player can run as a standalone application or as a plugin inside compatible DAWs on Windows and macOS. This includes common production environments such as Studio One, Ableton Live, Logic Pro, Cubase, Reaper and FL Studio.

The instrument itself is not a standalone VST. Kontakt Player acts as the host and provides the VST3, Audio Unit or AAX connection to the DAW.

Final Verdict

The Deer, the Fox and the Guitar is a focused but surprisingly versatile free Kontakt instrument. Its soft nylon-string recordings provide a musical starting point for emotional melodies, understated accompaniment and intimate cinematic writing.

The dynamic layers, round robins and legato slides add enough performance detail for expressive MIDI programming, while the snapshots and integrated effects extend the library into ambient and cinematic sound design.

It is especially valuable for composers, game developers and producers who need an organic melodic instrument without downloading a large orchestral collection or purchasing the full version of Kontakt.

The library may not replace a specialist guitar instrument built for complex strumming and detailed chord performance, but that is not its purpose. It offers a distinctive soft guitar and a useful collection of transformed textures at no cost. The deer and the fox are apparently included for artistic supervision, although their MIDI editing skills remain unconfirmed.
