Sojus Records has released a free software emulation of the Ensoniq SD-1/32, bringing one of the most distinctive digital synthesizers of the early 1990s into modern DAWs.

The project uses MAME-based hardware emulation rather than simply sampling the original instrument, recreating the SD-1 architecture, synthesis engine, effects, MIDI implementation and even its internal workflow.

The plugin is completely free and open source.

A Classic Ensoniq Synth Inside Your DAW

The original Ensoniq SD-1 appeared in 1990 as part of the company’s line of advanced digital workstations.

Its sound engine uses Ensoniq’s Transwave technology, combining waveform modulation with digital synthesis techniques that can produce everything from acoustic-style sounds to evolving digital textures, pads, basses and aggressive synth tones.

A single program can combine multiple waves with filters, envelopes, LFOs and extensive modulation.

Hardware-Level Emulation

This is not simply a modern synthesizer inspired by the SD-1.

Sojus Records uses MAME to emulate the original hardware architecture, including the Motorola processor, Ensoniq sound hardware and effects processing.

The result preserves much more of the original instrument’s behaviour than a conventional sample-based recreation.

The trade-off is higher CPU usage than many modern software synthesizers.

Import Original Ensoniq Sounds

One of the strongest features is compatibility with original Ensoniq sound data.

The integrated file manager can browse and import VFX, VFX-SD and SD-1 SysEx files, banks, disk images and compatible cartridge files.

This opens access to a huge ecosystem of sounds originally created for Ensoniq hardware.

A Modern Preset and File Manager

The latest version includes a dedicated browser for handling programs, presets, banks, disk images and cartridges.

You can access internal RAM and ROM banks alongside folders stored on your computer.

Single programs and complete SysEx banks can also be imported directly.

Full DAW Automation

The plugin integrates the SD-1 into a modern production environment with extensive automation support.

Controls can be automated from the DAW or assigned to MIDI controllers, while plugin state and global settings can be stored with your project.

You can also load multiple instances in the same session.

Important: Original ROM Files Are Required

There is one important requirement before downloading.

The Ensoniq ROM files are not included with the plugin.

Because the original ROM data remains copyrighted, Sojus Records cannot legally distribute it with the software.

The plugin requires the appropriate SD-1/32 and display ROM files to operate.

Users should obtain these files legally from hardware or another source they are authorized to use.
