Bowed Effigy was created while Justin Trieger was working on music set in ancient times.
Traditional violin and cello sounds were not providing the raw character he wanted, so the instrument was developed around a much less conventional source.
The acoustic guitar strings react differently under a bass bow, creating irregular attacks, unstable pitch details and a more physical sense of friction.

Three Dynamic Layers and Multiple Round Robins
The library uses multiple round robins across three dynamic layers to avoid the repetitive effect that can quickly appear with sampled sustained instruments.
Several ensemble patches combine these recordings to create thicker and broader textures.
This makes Bowed Effigy suitable for sustained melodic lines as well as layered cinematic beds and ensemble-like passages.
Scripted Legato
Long tones were recorded and combined with scripted legato to make the instrument more playable melodically.
Instead of functioning only as a collection of drones and textures, Bowed Effigy can therefore be used for expressive monophonic lines and slower cinematic melodies.
The imperfections in the original recordings help keep those lines from sounding excessively polished or synthetic.
Multiple Microphone Perspectives
Bowed Effigy includes both close and room recordings.
The close perspective uses a Mid/Side configuration, while a pair of omnidirectional microphones captures more of the surrounding room.
Dedicated level controls allow the perspectives to be blended directly from the interface.
This makes it possible to move from a focused, intimate bowed tone to a wider and more atmospheric sound without loading another patch.
From Organic Strings to Sound Design
The interface provides several controls for transforming the source recordings beyond their natural character.
Filtering, saturation and wow & flutter can introduce additional colour and instability, while convolution reverb uses impulse responses recorded in atmospheric and spiritual locations.
These tools allow the instrument to move from relatively natural bowed textures into much darker cinematic territory.
Use the Mod Wheel for Extra Expression
Justin Trieger also recorded an alternative set of sustained samples featuring audible rebowing.
On compatible patches, CC1 / the modulation wheel blends between smoother lyrical sustains and the more organic rebowed recordings.
This can add movement to long notes and make sustained passages feel more performed and less static.
Custom Pads Included
Bowed Effigy is not limited to its main bowed-string articulations.
Justin Trieger also created custom pad patches derived from the raw recordings.
These processed layers extend the library into ambient, horror and experimental territory and can work particularly well underneath the acoustic patches.
