Free Digital Audio Workstation
LUNA Free: A Complete DAW for Recording and Mixing
Unlimited tracks, audio and MIDI production, ARA integration, intelligent tempo tools, virtual instruments and analog-style processing for Windows and macOS.
LUNA Free is a complete digital audio workstation developed by Universal Audio for recording, editing, arranging and mixing music. Originally created around the company’s Apollo ecosystem, LUNA can now be used free of charge with compatible audio interfaces from other manufacturers.
The current LUNA 2 generation is available for Windows and macOS. Universal Audio confirms that the free licence provides the same core DAW functionality as LUNA Pro, with Hardware Inserts being the principal production feature reserved for the paid bundle.
LUNA Free includes unlimited tracks, ARA support, Smart Tempo tools, multi-output virtual instrument routing, automatic instrument detection, the Shape instrument library, ARP MIDI Arpeggiator and the Oxide Tape extension.

A Full DAW Rather Than a Reduced Edition
LUNA Free supports complete audio and MIDI projects. Producers can record musicians, edit performances, program virtual instruments, create buses, automate parameters and export finished mixes without moving to LUNA Pro.
Universal Audio states that the free licence provides all standard DAW functionality found in the Pro version. Hardware Inserts remain exclusive to LUNA Pro, while the paid bundle also adds a larger collection of UAD plugins, instruments, console emulations and ARA tools.
This distinction is important. LUNA Pro expands the sound library and analog-style processing environment, but the ability to record, edit, arrange and mix a complete song is already present in LUNA Free.
Unlimited Audio and Instrument Tracks
LUNA does not impose a fixed track-count limit. Sessions can contain as many audio, instrument, bus and auxiliary tracks as the computer can process.
Audio tracks support multitrack recording, editing and clip-based arrangement. Instrument tracks can host Universal Audio instruments or compatible third-party plugins.
Multi-output plugin support allows individual elements from a drum instrument or sampler to be routed onto separate mixer channels. Producers can therefore process kicks, snares, percussion and other parts independently inside the same session.
Shape Instrument Toolkit
The free Shape instrument provides a collection of ready-to-play sounds covering keyboards, drums, percussion, guitars, basses, orchestral instruments and synthesizers.
Shape gives new users enough material to begin writing without immediately installing a separate virtual instrument collection. Its preset-based workflow also suits producers who prefer selecting a sound quickly rather than programming every oscillator and envelope manually.
The library requires additional SSD storage beyond the basic LUNA application. Its exact installed size can vary according to the content selected through UA Connect.
ARP MIDI Arpeggiator
ARP is included with LUNA Free and can transform held notes or chords into tempo-synchronized melodic patterns.
It can generate repeating sequences for synthesizers, basses, keys and orchestral sounds. Because ARP operates as a MIDI effect inside LUNA, the notes remain connected to the selected virtual instrument and project tempo.
This makes it useful for electronic music, melodic house, synthwave, cinematic scoring and other styles built around repeating movement.
Oxide Tape Extension
Oxide Tape is also included free with LUNA. Unlike a conventional insert plugin, the extension is integrated directly into the LUNA mixer and can add tape-inspired saturation, harmonic colour and transient shaping to individual tracks.
The effect can provide additional weight to drums, soften brighter material or introduce a more cohesive character across instrument groups.
More advanced tape machines and console extensions from Studer, Ampex, API and Neve are sold separately or included with LUNA Pro.
Included With LUNA Free
Unlimited tracks, Shape instruments, ARP Arpeggiator, Oxide Tape, ARA support, Smart Tempo, Instrument Detection, multi-output plugin support, Bounce in Place, track presets, custom shortcuts and automatic session saving.
ARA and Advanced Audio Editing
LUNA 2 introduced ARA support, allowing compatible audio-editing plugins to operate directly inside the timeline without transferring audio into a separate application.
The free DAW provides the ARA hosting system. Compatible third-party ARA plugins must still be owned or installed separately unless they are supplied through another Universal Audio bundle.
LUNA also includes audio warping, timing correction and phase-coherent group quantization. These tools can be used to tighten drums, align performances and adapt recorded audio to the session tempo.
Smart Tempo and Instrument Detection
Smart Tempo tools can analyze imported loops or recorded performances and align the project grid with the music.
Tempo Detection identifies the timing of an imported file, while Extract Tempo can create a tempo map that follows the natural speed variations of a performance. Tempo Listen can establish a project tempo from music played without a click.
Instrument Detection automatically identifies common track types, applies labels, assigns colours and selects suitable warp settings. It is a small feature, but in larger sessions it can save producers from naming thirty tracks “Audio 17” and hoping memory will handle the rest.
Third-Party Plugin Support
LUNA supports VST3 plugins on Windows and macOS. Mac users can also load Audio Unit instruments and effects.
Using VST3 on both platforms provides better session compatibility when moving projects between Windows and macOS. Audio Unit plugins used in a Mac session will not load when the same project is opened on Windows.
LUNA also supports UAD Native, UAD-2 and dedicated LUNA Extensions. Apollo hardware is not required for native production, although Apollo owners gain access to deeper low-latency recording and monitoring workflows.
Export and Collaboration
Completed projects can be exported as WAV, AIFF, MP3 or AAC files. Producers can export the full mix, individual tracks, buses and stems, with or without effects.
LUNA can also export multitrack MIDI files containing tempo information. AAF import and export support helps exchange audio sessions with compatible applications such as Pro Tools and video-editing software.
Bounce in Place can render audio or instrument tracks with their processing applied, reducing CPU use while preserving the option to return to the original source and plugin settings.
Official LUNA 2 Overview
This official Universal Audio video presents LUNA 2, its updated workflow and its principal recording, editing and mixing features. Some additional plugins shown may require LUNA Pro or another paid Universal Audio licence.
Compatibility and Installation
- Windows: Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11
- macOS: macOS Big Sur 11 through macOS Tahoe 26
- Recommended processor: Intel quad-core i7 or Apple Silicon
- Recommended memory: 16 GB RAM or more
- Application storage: Approximately 600 MB, excluding instruments
- Installation: UA Connect must remain installed
- Licence: Free iLok account and computer activation
A physical iLok dongle is not required. The licence can be activated on the computer, and LUNA can be used on up to three systems.
Universal Audio recommends storing sessions and sample-based instruments on a compatible SSD. Additional space is required for Shape and any optional instruments installed through UA Connect.
What Does LUNA Pro Add?
LUNA Pro is primarily an expansion bundle rather than a replacement for a deliberately restricted free DAW.
It adds Hardware Inserts, premium UAD instruments, ARA tools and analog-style processing from API, Studer, Ampex, Pultec and other developers. These additions are useful for producers seeking a more extensive integrated studio environment, but they are not required to record and finish music in LUNA.
Final Verdict
LUNA Free is one of the strongest free DAWs available for producers who value recording, editing and traditional studio-style mixing. Unlimited tracks, Shape, Oxide Tape, ARP, ARA and Smart Tempo provide considerably more than a basic introductory package.
The UA Connect and iLok requirements make installation less immediate than a completely standalone download, and Linux users are not supported. For compatible Windows and macOS systems, however, the free licence contains enough functionality to produce complete professional sessions.
LUNA Free supplies the studio, tape extension, instruments and unlimited tracks. It still declines to explain why the final vocal always needs “one last small change.”
