Free Digital Audio Workstation
Waveform Free 14: A Complete Free DAW for Music Production
Record, compose, arrange and mix complete songs with audio and MIDI tools, built-in instruments, refreshed effects and third-party plugin support.
Waveform Free 14 by Tracktion is a free digital audio workstation designed for musicians, electronic producers, bands, podcasters and singer-songwriters. It provides the essential tools needed to record audio, sequence MIDI, arrange projects, process tracks and export finished music without purchasing the Pro edition.
The current free package includes 14 audio effects, 8 MIDI effects, 11 utility plugins and 4 virtual instruments. It is a permanent free edition rather than a temporary trial, although Tracktion also sells optional feature expansions for users who need more specialized functions.
A free Tracktion account is required to download, install and unlock the software.

Audio and MIDI Production in One Workspace
Waveform Free 14 supports multitrack audio recording, MIDI sequencing, editing, mixing and rendering inside one project. It can therefore handle complete productions rather than functioning only as a simple loop arranger or introductory beatmaking application.
Audio clips can be recorded, moved, trimmed, looped and processed directly in the arrangement. MIDI clips can be edited inline, while Step Clips provide a faster workflow for drums, basslines and repeating electronic patterns.
Retrospective Record can recover MIDI performances played before recording was activated. This is useful when a producer finds the right melody during rehearsal and realizes the record button has once again been observing the session from a safe distance.
Four Built-In Instruments
The free edition includes four instruments covering synthesis, drum programming and sample playback.
4OSC is a four-oscillator synthesizer suitable for basses, leads, pads and electronic textures. Micro Drum Sampler provides a compact environment for assembling drum kits and programming beats.
Micro Sampler can load and play custom audio material, while the included Rompler provides preset-based sounds for producers who want an immediate instrument without designing every patch from scratch.
These instruments are more modest than the larger synthesizers included with Waveform Pro, but they cover the basic sound-generation needs of a complete production.
Refreshed Effects and Mixing Utilities
Waveform Free 14 includes a refreshed collection of stock processing tools. Available effects cover compression, gating, limiting, chorus, phasing, delay, distortion, reverb, impulse responses and equalization.
The utility collection includes tools for mono conversion, Mid/Side splitting, spectrum analysis, A/B comparison, MIDI CC processing and MIDI note naming.
The eight-band equalizer adds adjustable slopes and Mid/Side operation, giving the free edition more detailed tonal control than a basic fixed-band EQ.
Third-Party Plugin Support
Waveform Free supports third-party VST and VST3 plugins on compatible systems, together with Audio Unit plugins on macOS. Producers can therefore expand the DAW with free or commercial instruments and effects.
A Redesigned Interface and Browser
Version 14 introduces a redesigned interface with new light and dark themes, higher contrast and an updated color editor. More than 20 visual presets are available, and users can create their own customized environments.
The browser has also been rebuilt around categories, tags, favorites and smart lists. Plugins, presets, racks, samples, clips and tracks can be searched from the same area, making large content collections easier to organize.
The Actions and Properties panels have been reorganized to reduce interface clutter, while a dedicated Actions panel provides quicker access to common project commands.
A Rewritten Audio Engine
Tracktion states that Waveform 14 uses a completely rewritten audio engine designed to reduce CPU usage, improve plugin delay compensation and make better use of modern multi-core processors.
This should be particularly useful in larger sessions containing several virtual instruments, effects chains and complex routing configurations.
Performance will still depend on the computer, audio interface, buffer settings and third-party plugins used in the project. Even a rewritten engine cannot negotiate peacefully with forty oversampled limiters on the master bus.
What Is Not Included for Free?
Waveform Free 14 provides the central recording and production environment, but several advanced features are sold as optional expansion packs.
Paid additions currently include Multi Channel mixing, the clip Launcher, DJ Mix Tools, extended video features, advanced recording tools, expanded MIDI functions and additional synthesizers or samplers.
These expansions are not required for conventional stereo music production. They allow users to extend the software gradually instead of moving directly to Waveform Pro.

Final Verdict
Waveform Free 14 is one of the most complete free DAWs currently available for Windows and macOS. It combines recording, MIDI sequencing, mixing, virtual instruments, stock effects and external plugin support without imposing a temporary trial period.
The optional expansion system means that some advanced features remain paid, but the core edition still provides enough functionality to record and finish complete songs.
For producers looking for a serious free alternative to commercial DAWs, Waveform Free 14 offers considerably more than a polite introduction. The software is free. Finishing the album remains stubbornly outside the installer.
