neo::synth: A Free Modular VST3 for Deep Sound Design
A flexible polyphonic synthesizer combining virtual analog oscillators, 24 filter models, spectral processing, vector mixing and granular sampling.
neo::synth is a free modular software synthesizer designed for producers who want deeper sound-design possibilities without paying for another large virtual instrument. It combines traditional subtractive synthesis with granular sampling, spectral morphing, vector mixing and a flexible modulation system.
The instrument contains 58 independent modules that can be connected through a 100-slot modulation matrix. This architecture allows producers to build straightforward basses and leads or create more complex evolving patches using multiple oscillators, filters, envelopes, noise sources and effects.
Version 0.6.0 is available for Windows and macOS. Windows users receive VST3 and standalone formats, while macOS users can install VST3, Audio Unit and standalone versions. The plugin is free to use and remains under active development.

A Modular Synthesis Architecture
neo::synth is built around independent modules rather than one fixed synthesis path. Oscillators, filters, envelopes, effects and utility modules can be combined through a large modulation matrix, giving users control over how each part of the sound interacts.
The oscillator section provides saw, sine, reverse saw, triangle and square waveforms. Pulse-width modulation is available for square waves, while every oscillator supports audio-rate frequency modulation and hard sync.
This makes the synth suitable for classic analog-style basses, bright sync leads, metallic FM textures and more experimental sounds. Producers can begin with a simple oscillator and filter patch, then introduce additional modulation as the sound develops.
Twenty-Four Filter Models
The filter section is one of the instrument’s strongest features. neo::synth includes 24 models inspired by recognizable analog designs, including Moog Ladder, TB-303, MS-20, Juno-106, Jupiter-8, Prophet-5, SSM2040, CEM3320 and diode ladder circuits.
These models give producers several tonal options, from smooth low-pass filtering to sharper resonant acid-style movement. Most filters also support filter-frequency modulation, making it possible to create more aggressive and animated timbres.
The official developer warns that extreme resonance settings can generate loud peaks. Lowering the monitoring level before exploring the more unstable filter settings is therefore a sensible precaution.
Spectral Morphing and Vector Mixing
neo::synth moves beyond standard subtractive synthesis with four spectral morphing algorithms. These include additive processing, McAulay-Quatieri analysis, sinusoidal plus residual modeling and an STFT phase-vocoder method.
Spectral processing can transform the internal character of a sound rather than simply filtering its frequencies. It is useful for creating evolving pads, synthetic voices, unusual transitions and textures that move between recognizable and abstract tones.
The eight-input vector mixer adds another method for combining sound sources. Its XY-based design is inspired by instruments such as the Prophet VS and Korg Wavestation, allowing several layers to be blended dynamically instead of remaining at fixed levels.
Granular Sampling
The granular sampler divides audio into small grains that can be rearranged and layered. Controls include grain size, spray, pitch spread, density and window shape.
This section can turn short recordings into atmospheric pads, rhythmic clouds, frozen textures and unstable digital soundscapes. It is particularly relevant for ambient music, cinematic production, experimental electronica and transitions.
Granular synthesis can quickly become dense, so simpler source material often produces clearer results. A short vocal, instrument note or field recording may be more useful than sending an entire finished mix into the sampler and hoping diplomacy prevails.
Modulation, Effects and Utilities
The modulation section includes ADSR, AHDSR and DADSR envelopes, an envelope follower and an LFO with five waveforms, including sample and hold. Lag and slew processing can create portamento and smoother transitions between modulation values.
White, pink and brown noise generators are included, along with an audio input module for processing external signals. The instrument also provides an oscilloscope and spectrum analyzer positioned alongside the signal flow.
Integrated processing modules include ring modulation, a decimator and bitcrusher, panning, a Juno-60-style BBD chorus and two spring reverb variants. These effects can add width, texture and movement without requiring a separate processing chain.
Best Uses
- Electronic music and sound design
- House and techno basses
- Synthwave leads and pads
- Ambient and cinematic textures
- Granular soundscapes
- Experimental effects and transitions
- Virtual analog synthesis
- Spectral and vector-based patches
Compatibility and Installation
The Windows edition requires Windows 10 or later and includes VST3 and standalone versions. The macOS installer is universal and provides Audio Unit, VST3 and standalone formats.
There is currently no official Linux version, CLAP plugin, AAX edition or VST2 build. Producers should therefore confirm that their DAW supports VST3 or Audio Unit before downloading.
Main Limitations
- No official Linux version
- No AAX, CLAP or VST2 format
- Only 48 factory presets are currently included
- Version 0.6.0 remains under active development
- The modular workflow may feel complex for beginners
- Extreme filter resonance can produce loud peaks
Final Verdict
neo::synth is an ambitious free instrument that offers considerably more than a conventional virtual analog synthesizer. Its combination of 58 modules, 24 filters, granular sampling, spectral morphing and vector mixing provides enough depth for serious experimentation.
The plugin is best suited to electronic producers, cinematic composers and sound designers who enjoy building patches rather than relying entirely on factory presets. Its current limitations are mainly related to platform support, plugin formats and its early development status.
For Windows and macOS producers willing to explore a modular workflow, neo::synth is an original free download with substantial creative potential.
