Bespoke Synth is a free and open-source modular digital audio workstation developed by Ryan Challinor. Instead of presenting producers with a fixed mixer, timeline and track layout, it provides a large collection of modules that can be connected together like components in a hardware modular system.
The software is available for Windows, macOS and Linux under the GNU GPLv3 license. Its free, Plus and Pro downloads contain exactly the same software and features. The optional payments are donations rather than upgrades, so the free edition can be used permanently without subscriptions, activation codes or artificial restrictions.

A DAW Built From Modules
Bespoke Synth begins with an open canvas rather than a predefined track list. Producers add modules and connect them using virtual cables carrying notes, audio, pulses or modulation values.
A basic patch might connect a MIDI controller to an oscillator, pass the audio through a filter and delay, then route the result to an output module. More advanced layouts can combine several sequencers, samplers, loopers, effects and modulation sources inside one performance environment.
Modules can be added while audio continues playing. This live-patchable workflow makes Bespoke especially useful for improvisation and experimentation because the production system can evolve during the session instead of being configured entirely in advance.
Sequencing and MIDI Production
The software includes numerous sequencing approaches rather than one standard piano roll. Producers can work with drum sequencers, Euclidean patterns, circular sequencers, polyrhythms, step sequencers and probability-based note generators.
The Note Canvas module provides a more recognizable looping note editor. It can record incoming MIDI, quantize performances, import MIDI files and export sequences as MIDI files.
External keyboards, pad controllers and control surfaces can be mapped through the MIDI Controller module. Bespoke supports conventional MIDI controls, 14-bit messages, feedback and multiple mapping pages. OSC control and MPE-oriented processing tools are also included.
Built-In Instruments and Sampling
Bespoke provides several internal sound generators, including oscillators, FM synthesis, physical modeling, drum synthesis and sample-based instruments. Producers can build complete patches without immediately loading third-party plugins.
The sampling tools include a sample browser, sample player, basic polyphonic sampler, drum player and granular Sea of Grain instrument. Audio can be sliced, triggered, repitched, looped and transformed through additional processing modules.
This modular approach makes it possible to use the same sample in several ways. One copy can form a conventional drum pattern while another is sent through granular processing, pitch shifting or rhythmic stuttering.
Looping and Audio Recording
Looping is one of Bespoke Synth’s strongest areas. The Looper and Looper Recorder modules support recording, overdubbing, tempo adjustment, resampling and retroactive capture.
Retroactive capture continuously keeps recent audio available, allowing a performance to be recovered even when the producer forgot to press record. The main interface can also write the previous 30 minutes of audio to the recordings folder.
A dedicated Multitrack Recorder records several synchronized audio sources and writes them to disk. The resulting tracks can be transferred into a conventional DAW for detailed editing and mixing.
Plugin Hosting and Effects
The official project lists VST, VST3 and LV2 plugin hosting. This allows compatible third-party instruments and effects to be integrated into modular patches alongside Bespoke’s internal modules.
VST2 availability can depend on the platform and build configuration. Producers using self-compiled versions may need access to the appropriate VST2 SDK to enable that format.
Built-in processing includes compression, equalization, delay, distortion, reverb, pitch shifting, granular effects, vocoding, stutter processing, tremolo and bit crushing. Effects can be connected in series, parallel paths or feedback networks.
Modulation and Python Live Coding
Bespoke provides envelopes, LFOs, curves, control sequencers, randomization modules and audio-to-control conversion. Modulation sources can be patched directly to interface controls, making almost any parameter part of a moving system.
The Control Recorder can capture parameter movements and replay them rhythmically. Snapshots can save complete groups of parameter values, while Song Builder organizes different states into scenes and sequences them into a larger arrangement.
Python scripting extends the system further. Notes, module parameters and scheduled events can be controlled through code, making Bespoke suitable for algorithmic composition and customized performance tools.
