Hyperfocus DSP has released Niner, a free open-source kick drum synthesizer for Windows, macOS and Linux.
The instrument combines three independent kick layers with a parallel 909-style clap voice, several distortion stages, master processing, a 16-step sequencer and direct WAV or AIFF export.
What Is Niner?
Niner is a monophonic virtual instrument designed specifically for creating electronic kick drums.
Instead of loading prerecorded samples, the plugin synthesizes each sound through three separate layers named SUB, MID and TOP. These sections can be balanced and processed independently before entering the master effects chain.
A separate clap voice inspired by the Roland TR-909 runs alongside the kick engine, allowing producers to build combined kick and clap patterns from one plugin instance.
A Three-Layer Kick Engine
The SUB layer uses a sine oscillator with a dedicated pitch envelope. It provides the low-frequency foundation and can produce short punchy kicks, longer sub tails and 808-inspired bass drums.
The MID section combines a sine oscillator with noise. Its tone, color and envelope controls shape the weight and character between the sub and transient layers.
The TOP layer generates a band-pass-filtered click. Frequency, bandwidth and metallic resonance controls determine how sharply the kick cuts through the mix.

Its center frequency can be tuned between 500 and 5000 Hz, while the tail can range from 50 to 400 milliseconds.
The clap can be disabled completely when only the kick engine is required.
Multiple Distortion Stages
Niner provides several forms of harmonic processing rather than one generic saturation control.

A tilt EQ, low shelf and variable-Q notch filter provide additional tonal control before the final output stage.
Transformer drive, brickwall limiting and automatic warmth help move the result from a clean synthesized kick toward a denser and more processed club sound.
These tools are built directly into the instrument, reducing the need to build a long external processing chain for every new kick.
16-Step Sequencer
Niner includes a 16-step pattern sequencer for auditioning sounds and creating simple rhythms.
Inside a DAW, the sequencer follows the host tempo and transport. The standalone version uses its own internal playback controls.
Steps can be painted quickly by clicking or dragging across the pattern row.
Export Kicks as WAV or AIFF
The Bounce function renders the current sound through the complete processing chain.
Niner exports 16-bit, 44.1 kHz WAV or AIFF files. The render is performed separately from the live audio engine, allowing playback to continue while the file is created.
This is useful for producers who prefer working with one-shot samples after designing the sound.
A kick can be created inside Niner, exported and then loaded into a sampler, drum rack or hardware production system.
Factory and User Presets
The plugin includes a preset browser for factory and user-created sounds.
Presets can be saved, renamed and deleted directly from the interface. Factory sounds are protected against accidental deletion.
The preset format was designed to remain compatible with future versions when new parameters are introduced.

Audio Unit is not supported because the development framework used for Niner does not currently provide AU export.

Installation and Security Warnings
Separate archives are supplied for Linux, Intel Mac, Apple Silicon Mac and Windows.
The current macOS and Windows builds are not digitally signed. macOS users may need to remove the quarantine flag or authorize the plugin through Privacy and Security.
Windows SmartScreen may also display an unknown publisher warning during installation.
Hyperfocus DSP publishes SHA-256 checksums with each release so users can verify the integrity of the downloaded archives.

The license applies to the plugin software and source code. Audio created or exported with Niner can be used in commercial music productions.

Important Limitations
Niner is monophonic and designed to play one kick at a time. Producers who need several overlapping drum sounds must use multiple instances or export the sounds as samples.
The absence of Audio Unit support excludes Logic Pro users, although most other macOS DAWs can load the VST3 or CLAP editions.
The interface also uses fixed-ratio scaling rather than completely free window resizing.
