Tape Echo 2 by Dusk Audio is a free three-head tape delay designed around the behaviour of classic mechanical echo machines.
Instead of simply placing three digital delays behind a vintage-looking interface, the plugin models a shared tape transport, record and playback stages, tape wear, wow and flutter, regeneration and an integrated spring reverb.
The result can move from subtle slapback and rhythmic echoes to dub-style feedback, unstable worn-tape textures and full self-oscillation.
Three Playback Heads, One Virtual Tape Motor
Tape Echo 2 uses three playback heads positioned at fixed mechanical ratios.
All three are driven by the same virtual motor, so changing the repeat rate moves the complete echo pattern together rather than adjusting three unrelated delay times.
The first playback head ranges from roughly 70 to 178 milliseconds, while the later heads extend the available delay time to approximately 490 milliseconds.
Because the transport includes simulated inertia, changing the repeat rate produces a smooth pitch glide instead of an instant digital jump.

A large Head Select control provides twelve different routing configurations.
You can use each playback head individually, combine multiple heads or introduce the built-in spring reverb into the signal path.

New, Used or Old Tape
The Tape Age section offers three cartridge conditions rather than a generic continuous lo-fi control.
New provides the tightest timing and cleanest repeats. Used introduces more audible flutter, hiss and level movement, while Old pushes the machine toward heavier scrape flutter, noise and unstable playback.
Importantly, these parameters change together. Increasing the age affects wow, flutter, hiss and level instability as parts of the same virtual tape mechanism.
Built-In Spring Reverb
Tape Echo 2 also includes a modeled spring reverb with three unequal virtual springs.
The echo and reverb sections have independent level and pan controls, allowing the ambience to be positioned separately from the delayed signal.
A dedicated Record Input switch can stop new audio from entering the tape loop while leaving the spring reverb active. This makes it possible to let existing echoes disappear while a reverb wash continues underneath.
From One Repeat to Self-Oscillation
The Intensity parameter controls how much of the delayed signal is recorded back onto the virtual tape.
Low settings produce a small number of controlled repeats. Increase the value and the echoes begin to form longer rhythmic cascades.
At extreme settings, the feedback loop moves into self-oscillation.
The plugin models saturation and compression inside the feedback path, allowing runaway echoes to build into increasingly dense and distorted textures rather than simply producing harsh digital clipping.
Tempo Sync With Mechanical Limits
Tape Echo 2 can synchronize its transport to the host tempo using eleven rhythmic note settings.
However, the plugin deliberately respects the physical range of the modeled tape motor.
If a selected rhythmic division would require the virtual transport to operate slower than the original concept allows, the delay stays at the maximum available motor range.
This slightly unusual behaviour helps preserve the character of a mechanical tape echo instead of turning it into a completely unrestricted digital delay.
