A new layer of intellectual property is emerging around generative music. Music IP Holdings has unveiled a patent licensing framework for AI-generated content, with Udio and GRAI named as its first technology licensees.

Udio and GRAI become the first licensees

According to Music IP Holdings, the licenses are designed to support AI services involving covers, remixes and interactive music experiences. The framework also includes protections intended to address unauthorized redistribution of AI-generated content outside licensed services.

Why this matters
The AI-music debate is no longer only about copyright. Patent licensing could become a second legal and commercial layer covering the technology used to create, identify, authorize, distribute and monetize AI-generated music.

What the patent portfolio covers

MIH says the portfolio spans the full workflow of AI-generated content, including prompt-based creation, moderation, watermarking, identifier tagging, authorization, licensed distribution and payment. The announced scope extends beyond music to audio, video, film, animation, images, text and certain name-and-likeness applications.

The initiative is connected to Universal Music Group and Liquidax Capital. Music IP Holdings was formed through their strategic partnership to develop, license and commercialize AI-related intellectual property. UMG announced that relationship in July 2025 as part of an effort to accelerate its AI patent activity.

A new licensing layer for generative music

The most important part of the announcement is not simply that Udio has signed another music-industry agreement. It is the possibility that generative music is moving toward a multi-layer licensing environment. A platform may increasingly have to think about copyrighted recordings and compositions, training and output rights, artist likeness, and patented technical processes at the same time.

For artists and songwriters, MIH presents the system as a way to strengthen control and create additional revenue opportunities. For AI developers, the commercial proposition is different: a standardized licensing route could reduce uncertainty and make it easier to launch products built around licensed music and interactive fan experiences.

Audiartist analysis
Patents do not replace copyright. They protect different things. The real significance will depend on the exact patent claims, how broadly they apply to commercial AI systems, how widely the licenses are adopted and whether any of the patents are eventually tested in disputes or litigation.

Why Udio’s participation is notable

Udio is already one of the most closely watched companies in generative music. Becoming an early licensee gives MIH a recognizable adopter and signals that part of the AI-music sector is willing to build around formal licensing infrastructure rather than rely only on unresolved legal interpretations.

Udio CEO Andrew Sanchez described the agreement as an inflection point for AI and music and said the company is working on infrastructure intended to protect artists while enabling new creative experiences. GRAI, meanwhile, is developing a social music service built around licensed music and user interaction, with a foundation model the company says is trained on licensed data.

What happens next?

The portfolio is now being offered to other AI innovators through an online licensing platform. The next major signal will be whether additional AI music companies, streaming services, labels or creative technology platforms adopt the framework.

The size of a patent portfolio alone does not determine its market power. Its practical impact will become clearer as companies implement the technology, negotiate licenses and potentially challenge or enforce individual patent claims.
