MechanOdd: A Free Physical-Modeling Synth VST3

Create metallic percussion, resonant strings, unstable drones and imaginary acoustic instruments with exciters, feedback and mechanical resonators.

MechanOdd is a free and open-source physical-modeling synthesizer developed by FX-Mechanics.

Instead of starting with conventional analog oscillators and subtractive filtering, the instrument generates sound by sending excitation signals into simulated mechanical structures. These structures include vibrating strings, plates, membranes and stiff beams.

The resonators can interact through a flexible feedback matrix, creating complex tones that move between realistic acoustic behaviour and completely imaginary instruments.

MechanOdd is available for Windows, macOS and Linux. The complete plugin can be downloaded from the developer’s official GitHub repository without purchasing a commercial version or activating a subscription.

What Is MechanOdd?

MechanOdd is based on the relationship between an excitation signal and a resonating object.

An acoustic guitar string, drum membrane or metal plate does not produce sound independently. It must first be plucked, struck, bowed or otherwise excited. MechanOdd recreates this principle inside a software instrument.

Its signal path contains four main stages:

  • Sources: Generate the initial excitation signal.
  • Resonators: Transform that signal through mathematical models of mechanical objects.
  • Feedback matrix: Routes sources and resonator outputs back into the system.
  • Effects: Add space, saturation, dynamics and final tonal shaping.

This architecture can produce plucked strings, metallic hits, synthetic drums, bowed textures, unstable resonances and evolving soundscapes.

Four Excitation Sources

MechanOdd provides four independent source slots. Each one can generate a different type of excitation signal.

  • Wavetable: A band-limited oscillator suitable for tonal and sustained excitation.
  • Noise: A shaped random signal that can imitate breath, friction or bow-like energy.
  • Cracks: Sparse impulses designed for plucked, struck and percussive sounds.

Each source includes controls for tuning, level, filtering, velocity response and envelope behaviour.

A short impulse can create a sharp pluck or metallic hit, while a sustained wavetable or noise signal can keep the resonator moving for drones and longer textures.

The four sources can be layered or routed toward different resonators, allowing one patch to combine tonal, noisy and percussive components.

Strings, Plates, Membranes and Beams

The resonator section contains four slots that represent the physical structures responsible for shaping the sound.

Waveguide String models the movement of a vibrating string using bidirectional delay lines. It can produce plucked, bowed and sustained string-like tones.

Plate simulates the complex vibration modes of a rectangular plate. It is useful for metallic percussion, bells and resonant industrial textures.

Membrane behaves more like a drum head or stretched surface. It can create synthetic drums, impacts and low resonant hits.

Beam or Modal String produces stiffer and more inharmonic responses that work well for unusual plucks, rods and mechanical sound design.

Each resonator can operate independently for every played voice or globally across the complete polyphonic output.

The 4 x 9 Feedback Matrix

The feedback matrix is the central sound-design section of MechanOdd.

Its four rows represent the four resonators. The nine columns carry the four source signals, the four resonator outputs and the processed send-bus signal.

Each matrix cell uses a bipolar gain control. Producers can decide how much signal is sent to each resonator and whether its polarity is positive or negative.

Resonator outputs can be routed back into other resonators, creating coupled mechanical systems. The effects send can also return to the matrix, allowing delay, saturation and other processing to become part of the feedback structure.

These connections can generate complex harmonics and self-sustaining tones. They can also create significant level increases, so feedback amounts should be raised gradually.

Polyphony and Modulation

MechanOdd supports up to eight voices of polyphony. Each note can run its own sources, resonators and per-voice envelope processing.

The modulation section provides twelve global modulators. These can be assigned to almost any floating-point parameter inside the synthesizer.

Available modulators include LFOs and ADSR envelopes. The LFOs provide sine, triangle, square, rising saw and falling saw waveforms.

Modulation rates can run freely in Hertz or synchronize with the DAW tempo, including straight and triplet divisions.

Per-voice ADSR envelopes allow each note to develop independently. This is especially useful for velocity-sensitive plucks, struck instruments and polyphonic textures where every note requires a separate response.

Portamento is also available for sliding between notes, with a range extending up to two seconds.

Two Flexible Effect Chains

MechanOdd includes two serial effect chains with four slots each.

The Bus chain processes the send signal and can feed its output back into the modulation matrix. The Master chain processes the final stereo mix.

Available processors include:

  • Stereo delay
  • Tube-style saturation
  • Parametric equalizer
  • Octaver
  • Compressor
  • Brickwall limiter and maximizer
  • Transient shaper
  • Cabinet impulse-response processor
  • Convolution reverb

The cabinet section includes 19 impulse responses, while the convolution reverb contains six room and hall responses.

Placing the limiter in the final Master slot is recommended when experimenting with strong feedback or self-oscillating settings.

Best Uses

Metallic percussion: Combine short crack impulses with plate and beam resonators.

Cinematic sound design: Create tension layers, impacts, strange acoustic objects and evolving mechanical drones.

Ambient music: Use sustained noise, global resonators, long reverb and slowly moving modulation.

Techno: Design resonant sequences, synthetic percussion and unstable industrial textures.

Experimental electronic music: Build feedback systems that change continuously instead of repeating a static waveform.

Organic House: Create unusual plucks, marimba-like tones and resonant percussion that can complement guitars, flutes and hand drums.

Production Tips

Begin with one excitation source and one resonator. It is easier to understand the interaction between both sections before activating the complete feedback matrix.

Use crack impulses for short percussive sounds and sustained noise for bowed, scraped or wind-like textures.

Increase feedback slowly while monitoring the output meter. Several moderate routes can combine into a much louder signal than expected.

Place a limiter in the final Master slot before exploring self-oscillating patches.

Automate the matrix or modulation parameters to create movement across breakdowns, transitions and cinematic passages.

Render promising experiments to audio. A physical-modeling patch may behave slightly differently when its feedback, envelopes and modulation interact, which makes resampling especially productive.

Compatibility and Installation

  • Windows: 64-bit VST3
  • Linux: 64-bit VST3
  • macOS: VST3, Audio Unit and standalone application
  • Mac processors: Universal Intel and Apple Silicon binary
  • Minimum macOS version: macOS 10.13
  • Polyphony: Up to eight voices
  • Current version: 0.3.1
  • Price: Free and open source

Windows and Linux users can copy the VST3 bundle into the standard system plugin directory and rescan the folder inside the DAW.

The macOS build is not notarized with an Apple Developer ID. Users may need to open the installer manually or remove the quarantine attribute before the plugin appears inside the DAW.

Version 0.3 introduced a dedicated preset-management page and made the factory presets available inside compatible hosts. Version 0.3.1 corrected the Mac Intel distribution.

Final Verdict

MechanOdd is a distinctive free instrument for producers who want to explore physical modeling beyond conventional plucked-string presets.

Its four sources, four resonators and flexible feedback matrix can create acoustic-style tones, metallic percussion, synthetic drums, unstable drones and completely imaginary mechanical instruments.

The modulation and effects sections provide enough depth to turn a simple resonator patch into a complete evolving texture. Support for Windows, macOS and Linux also makes the project unusually accessible.

The interface and feedback architecture require more experimentation than a standard subtractive synthesizer. It is best suited to producers who enjoy building sounds and resampling unexpected results.

MechanOdd can model strings, plates, membranes and beams. It cannot explain what kind of imaginary machine you have created after routing all of them into each other, but that is probably part of the attraction.
