OctaSine is a free VST plugin designed for producers who want to explore frequency modulation synthesis without relying on a commercial instrument.
Developed by Joakim Frostegård, this open-source soft synth combines four FM operators, flexible routing, four LFOs and stereo modulation controls inside a clear interface.
OctaSine is available in VST2 and CLAP formats for Windows, macOS and Linux.

What Is OctaSine?
OctaSine is a four-operator FM synthesizer plugin. Each operator can generate sine, square, triangle, saw or noise waveforms and includes controls for volume, panning, feedback and frequency.
The operators can modulate one another or be sent directly to the output, allowing the plugin to combine frequency modulation and additive synthesis.
Four Flexible FM Operators
Each operator includes ratio, free-frequency and fine-tuning controls. This makes it possible to create harmonic sounds, metallic textures, bells, basses and more experimental tones.
Every operator also has its own ADSR volume envelope. Envelope groups help users edit several operators together when a patch needs consistent timing.
Four LFOs and Tempo Sync
OctaSine includes four LFOs with several waveform options, loop and one-shot modes, and optional synchronization with the DAW tempo.
The LFOs can modulate most operator parameters and can also influence lower-numbered LFOs. This allows patches to evolve without requiring external automation.
Stereo FM Modulation
One of OctaSine’s most distinctive features is modulation panning.
The FM signal can be positioned within the stereo field, creating width and movement directly inside the synthesis engine. The plugin also uses true stereo panning rather than a simple balance control.
What Can OctaSine Create?
- Digital bass sounds
- Metallic leads and plucks
- FM bells and mallets
- Evolving pads
- Percussive noise patches
- Experimental stereo textures
The noise waveform is particularly useful for hi-hats, cymbals and synthetic percussion.
Compatibility and Plugin Formats
- Windows: Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit, VST2 and CLAP
- macOS: macOS 10.15 or later, Intel and Apple Silicon, VST2 and CLAP
- Linux: 64-bit systems using X11, VST2 and CLAP
OctaSine requires a compatible DAW or plugin host. It is not available as VST3, Audio Unit, AAX or standalone software.
Installation and Registration
No account, license manager or activation code is required.
Windows and macOS users can download official compiled versions. Linux users can use the provided Ubuntu build or compile the plugin from source.
macOS users may need to adjust Gatekeeper permissions because the plugin is not distributed through the App Store.
License and Availability
OctaSine is free and open source under the GNU Affero General Public License version 3.

Important Limitations
OctaSine does not currently offer VST3 or Audio Unit support. Producers must use a host that still supports VST2 or the newer CLAP format.
FM synthesis can also require more experimentation than a traditional subtractive synth, especially when several operators modulate one another.
Final Verdict
OctaSine is a capable free FM synthesizer for producers interested in digital basses, bells, percussion and evolving stereo sounds.
Its four operators, flexible routing and unusual modulation-panning system give it a distinctive identity, while the open-source license keeps the plugin accessible across Windows, macOS and Linux.
It is not the most conventional synth to learn, but FM synthesis was never famous for holding anyone’s hand.
