SkyVerb by kelegorm is a free VST plugin designed for ambient music, cinematic production, downtempo and experimental sound design.
Instead of using a single conventional reverb engine, it combines a wide stereo wash with small binaural events that appear around the listener. The result is a spacious effect built for movement, depth and long atmospheric tails.
SkyVerb is available for Windows and macOS in VST3 format, with an additional Audio Unit version for macOS.

What Is SkyVerb?
SkyVerb is an audio effect built around two separate layers called Sky and Stars.
The Sky section produces a continuous stereo reverb wash. It is designed for long, open tails rather than realistic room simulation.
The Stars section generates smaller spatial events that react to the incoming signal and appear at different positions around the listener.
A Two-Layer Reverb Engine
The Sky layer controls the main reverberant space through four parameters:
- Size
- Brightness
- Spacing
- Wind
Size controls the scale and length of the space, while Brightness changes its tonal color. Spacing adjusts width, and Wind adds movement between the stereo channels.
The reverb can move from a relatively close ambience to tails lasting up to approximately ten seconds.
Binaural Stars
The Stars layer produces small events positioned around the listener using KEMAR HRTF measurements.
These events are separate from the main reverb tail and can respond to notes, transients and changes in the source signal.
The Response control determines how quickly the stars appear. It can operate freely for up to three seconds or synchronize to the host tempo from one to eight quarter notes.
Rate controls how frequently the events occur, Level adjusts their volume, and Character changes them from dark and soft to brighter and sharper.
Headphones and Speaker Modes
SkyVerb includes two monitoring modes.
Headphones mode provides the full binaural positioning effect, making the stars appear around the listener in three-dimensional space.
Speaker mode converts the effect into a wide, mono-compatible stereo image intended for monitors, laptops and other loudspeaker systems.
Simple Workflow
The plugin uses nine main controls divided into Sky, Stars and Output sections.
A wet and dry Mix control is included, along with a Mix Lock function that keeps the same balance when changing presets.
The live display at the top of the interface shows the reverb wash and the position of each active star. It acts as visual feedback rather than simple decoration.
Presets and Interface Features
SkyVerb includes eight factory presets:
- Overcast
- Clear
- Sky Opening
- Cirrus
- Aurora
- Storm
- Vocal Sky
- Cinematic Overcast
Users can save personal presets, mark favorites and compare two settings with the A/B system.
The interface is fully resizable and includes output metering and an illustrated manual.
Best Uses for SkyVerb
- Ambient pads and drones
- Cinematic soundscapes
- Downtempo synths
- Atmospheric vocals
- Experimental guitar processing
- Long reverb tails for piano
- Spatial effects for percussion
- Headphone-focused sound design
SkyVerb works especially well on sustained sources with space between notes. Pads, guitars, piano and vocals give the Stars layer enough room to answer without overcrowding the original performance.
Compatibility and Plugin Formats
- Windows: Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit, VST3
- macOS: macOS 12 Monterey or later, VST3 and Audio Unit
- Mac processors: Intel and Apple Silicon
The plugin requires a compatible VST3 or Audio Unit host.
No VST2, AAX, CLAP, LV2, Linux or standalone version is officially available.
Installation and Registration
SkyVerb can be downloaded directly from the official developer website.
No account, serial number, license manager or permanent internet connection is required.
The current builds are not code-signed. On Windows, SmartScreen may display a warning. On macOS, the installer handles the quarantine flag so the plugin can be opened inside the DAW.
Important Limitations
SkyVerb is designed for creative and atmospheric reverb rather than realistic room simulation.
Its long tails and spatial events may be too noticeable for transparent mixing or short drum-room effects.
The full binaural effect is best experienced through headphones. The speaker mode remains wide and mono-compatible but does not provide the same three-dimensional positioning.
Linux, AAX and CLAP users are not currently supported.
License and Official Download
SkyVerb is free with no time limit. The developer states that it can be used for music and audio work, including commercial projects.

Final Verdict
SkyVerb is a distinctive free reverb VST3 plugin for producers who want depth and movement rather than another conventional hall or plate.
Its combination of a wide stereo wash and reactive binaural events gives ambient, cinematic and experimental sounds a more animated spatial character.
The interface remains simple, the presets are useful and the headphone mode offers a convincing sense of direction.
SkyVerb may not replace a natural room reverb, but it was never trying to behave like a polite room in the first place.
