Reverie by Quiet Music is a free VST plugin that transforms incoming audio into tuned strings, evolving textures and atmospheric layers.
Created for the KVR Developer Challenge 2026, the plugin combines a sympathetic string resonator with an audio-reactive sampler. Drums, vocals, pads, noise and field recordings can all become the starting point for new harmonic material.
Reverie is available for Windows and macOS in VST3 format, with an additional Audio Unit version for macOS.

What Is Reverie?
Reverie is an audio effect rather than a conventional synthesizer. It does not receive MIDI notes or produce sound from a keyboard.
Instead, the plugin listens to an incoming audio signal and uses it to excite a bank of modeled strings. The result can resemble sympathetic strings, resonant drones, shimmering pads or tuned ambient reflections.
Karplus-Strong String Resonator
The main engine uses Karplus-Strong synthesis to model between one and 24 sympathetic strings.
Users can select a musical root note and tuning scale, then adjust decay, damping, dispersion, detuning, warmth and stereo width.
Seven string materials are available:
- Plain
- Nylon
- Gut
- Steel
- Bronze
- Crystal
- Felt
These options allow the effect to move from soft and muted resonance to brighter, more metallic textures.
Audio-Reactive Texture Sampler
Reverie also includes a sampler called Texture. It can load WAV, AIFF and FLAC files and trigger or loop them in response to the dynamics of the incoming audio.
The sampler offers Trigger and Flow modes, forward, reverse and ping-pong playback, plus editable loop markers.
In Excite mode, the loaded sample can drive the string resonator. This allows producers to excite the modeled strings with percussion, foley, noise or atmospheric recordings.
Pitch Tracking and Morph Control
The Track function analyzes the pitch of the incoming signal and excites the nearest string within the selected scale.
This can produce harmonized echoes, melody-following string layers and unusual resonant arpeggios.
A central Morph macro moves between the string engine and the Texture sampler. It can be automated to create gradual transitions from pure resonance to fully sampled textures.
Scales and Microtonal Tuning
Reverie includes 21 tuning systems, including conventional scales and microtonal options such as quarter tones, Pythagorean tuning, just intonation, Slendro and Pelog.
A custom scale builder provides 16 slots for creating personal tuning structures.
This makes the plugin useful for ambient music, cinematic composition, experimental sound design and productions that move beyond standard major and minor harmony.
Modulation and Effects
A drawable modulator can be assigned to 17 destinations across the string and sampler engines.
It can operate freely or synchronize to the DAW tempo, with forward, reverse and ping-pong playback modes.
Reverie also includes an excitation filter, transient emphasis, drive, bloom, feedback delay and reverb with a freeze function.
Factory Presets and Samples
The plugin includes 48 factory presets covering string voicings, reactive harps, drones, ambient beds and experimental textures.
Its factory library contains 23 samples that are installed automatically during the first launch.
Users can also import their own material to create personalized resonant instruments and evolving effects.
Best Uses for Reverie
- Turning drum loops into tuned pads
- Creating ambient textures from field recordings
- Adding sympathetic resonance to vocals
- Building cinematic drones and soundscapes
- Transforming noise into harmonic layers
- Creating melody-following string effects
- Resampling experimental percussion
- Designing evolving transitions
Compatibility and Plugin Formats
- Windows: Windows 10 or later, 64-bit, VST3
- macOS: macOS 11 or later, VST3 and Audio Unit
- Mac processors: Intel and Apple Silicon
The macOS version is supplied as a notarized Universal Binary.
Reverie supports project sample rates from 44.1 kHz to 192 kHz and requires approximately 100 MB of disk space.
No VST2, AAX, CLAP, LV2 or standalone version is officially listed.
Installation and Registration
Reverie requires a compatible VST3 or Audio Unit host.
No online activation or permanent internet connection is required. The included sample library installs automatically when the plugin is opened for the first time.
Important Limitations
Reverie is not a virtual instrument and cannot be played directly from a MIDI keyboard.
Its results also depend heavily on the source audio. Rhythmic, bright or harmonically rich signals generally create more obvious resonance than very quiet or static material.
The plugin is designed for creative processing rather than transparent mixing. It may be too distinctive for corrective or neutral studio tasks.

Final Verdict
Reverie is an original free sound design plugin for producers who enjoy turning ordinary recordings into musical textures.
Its combination of modeled sympathetic strings, audio-reactive sampling, pitch tracking, microtonal scales and drawable modulation gives it a clear identity.
It is especially well suited to ambient music, cinematic composition, experimental electronic production and creative resampling.
Reverie does not simply add an effect to a sound. It politely asks the sound to become an instrument, which is considerably more interesting than another ordinary reverb preset.
