Introduction: The Origins of Synthwave

Synthwave, also known as retrowave, is a genre that blends the nostalgic sounds of the 1980s with modern production techniques. Born in the early 2000s, it was inspired by the music of iconic 80s movies, video games, and television shows. The genre seeks to recreate the vibrant atmosphere of that era, filled with analog synthesizers, drum machines, and neon aesthetics.

Artists like Kavinsky, known for his track « Nightcall » featured in the movie Drive, and Power Glove, who created the soundtrack for Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, have played pivotal roles in popularizing synthwave. Other influential names include Carpenter Brut, with their dark, intense soundscapes, and Perturbator, who combines futuristic tones with dystopian themes. The genre pays homage to composers such as Vangelis (famed for the Blade Runner score) and John Carpenter (the mastermind behind numerous 80s horror soundtracks).

Structuring a Synthwave Track

A synthwave track is typically built on a nostalgic foundation, following a tried-and-true structure that balances melody, rhythm, and atmosphere. Here is a detailed framework:

1. Introduction

The introduction sets the tone for the entire track. Use lush, evolving pads and atmospheric effects to create an immersive opening. Subtle arpeggios and a simple bassline can help build anticipation. Avoid introducing the main melody or heavy drums too early to maintain intrigue.

2. Verse

The verse is where the rhythm starts to develop. Introduce a retro drumbeat using instruments like the Roland TR-808, paired with a pulsating bassline from synths such as the Moog Minimoog. Keep the melody simple, focusing on a repetitive yet engaging motif. This section often sets the mood and allows the listener to settle into the groove.

3. Pre-Chorus

The pre-chorus serves as a transitional phase that builds tension before the chorus. Introduce new elements such as rising chords, subtle percussions, or effects like white noise sweeps. Use automation to gradually increase the volume or filter cutoff on key instruments to heighten the anticipation.

4. Chorus

The chorus is the climax of the track, featuring the most impactful elements. Layer rich pads with soaring lead synths and reinforce the rhythm section with claps, snares, and cymbals. Instruments like the Sequential Prophet-5 excel in creating powerful, lush harmonies that evoke strong emotions. This section should feel expansive and energetic, often serving as the hook that listeners remember.

5. Breakdown

The breakdown provides a moment of contrast and respite. Strip back the arrangement to a single ambient pad or a soft lead melody. Reverb and delay effects are essential here, creating a dreamy, spacious environment. This section allows for a reset and builds anticipation for the final sections of the track.

6. Climax

The climax reintroduces all elements from the chorus with additional intensity. Layer counter-melodies or variations of the main theme to add depth. This section often features dramatic fills or transitions to maintain energy and excitement. It is the emotional peak of the track.

7. Outro

The outro winds the track down, leaving the listener with a sense of resolution. Gradually fade out instruments, focusing on a single melodic element or an ambient pad. Often, the outro mirrors the introduction, creating a full-circle moment that reinforces the nostalgic atmosphere.

Instruments Used in Synthwave

To capture the authentic synthwave sound, certain instruments are essential. These include:

  • Roland Juno-60: Famous for its warm pads and iconic leads.
  • Moog Minimoog: Perfect for deep basslines and analog richness.
  • Sequential Prophet-5: Ideal for lush chords and polyphonic textures.
  • Arturia Jupiter-8V: A software recreation of the legendary Jupiter-8, suitable for arpeggios and leads.
  • Roland TR-808: The quintessential drum machine for retro beats.

Conclusion

Synthwave is more than just a music genre; it’s a journey through time, evoking the neon-lit dreams of the 1980s. By understanding its structure and utilizing classic instruments, you can craft tracks that resonate with nostalgia and modern sensibilities alike.
