THEDI by Analog Obsession: A Free Colored DI Box VST

Tighten the low end, enhance the mids and add analog-style presence to direct instrument recordings.

THEDI is a free coloration plugin developed by Analog Obsession. It is designed to bring the character of a colored hardware DI box into a modern DAW workflow.

The plugin focuses on three broad tonal changes: tighter low frequencies, more present midrange information and additional sparkle in the upper frequencies. Its deliberately simple interface makes it easy to add character without opening a complicated channel strip.

Completely free: THEDI is available from Analog Obsession’s official Patreon page. The developer distributes its plugin catalogue for free, with optional donations and memberships helping to support future development.

What Is THEDI?

THEDI is an audio coloration effect inspired by the tonal behaviour of a well-known hardware DI box. Analog Obsession does not identify the exact unit being referenced, so the plugin is better understood as a creative DI-style processor rather than an officially licensed hardware emulation.

A DI box is commonly used to connect instruments such as electric guitar or bass directly to a recording system. THEDI recreates the coloration stage in software, allowing producers to process an already recorded signal inside their DAW.

Main purpose: THEDI is designed to tighten direct instrument signals, improve midrange definition and add a brighter sense of presence before further processing or amplifier simulation.

Main Features

  • Colored DI box circuit-style processing
  • Low-end tightening and tonal enhancement
  • Gain-compensated Level control
  • Parallel Dry/Wet Mix control
  • Power button for bypassing the processing
  • Lightweight anti-aliasing system
  • Resizable interface from 50% to 200%
  • Support for Intel and Apple Silicon Macs
  • VST3, AU and AAX formats depending on the operating system

A Simple Three-Control Workflow

THEDI keeps its interface intentionally minimal. Instead of presenting a large collection of EQ bands, saturation modes and transformer options, it provides three main controls.

Level: Adjusts the output level while compensating for changes in gain, helping users compare the processed and unprocessed signals more fairly.

Mix: Blends the dry signal with the processed sound. Lower settings can add subtle coloration, while higher values reveal more of the plugin’s complete tonal character.

Power: Bypasses the processing so the original and colored signals can be compared quickly.

This limited control set makes THEDI easy to use during recording, mixing and sound selection. The main decision is not how to construct the effect, but how much of its coloration the track actually needs.

Using THEDI on Bass Guitar

Bass guitar is one of the most logical applications for a DI-style coloration plugin. A directly recorded bass can sometimes feel overly clean, soft or disconnected from the rest of the production.

THEDI can be inserted before an amplifier simulator to give the original DI signal more density and definition. It can also be used without an amp simulation when the production needs a cleaner but more assertive bass tone.

Starting point: Insert THEDI before the bass amp simulator, set Mix to approximately 50%, then increase it while listening to the low-end definition. Match the perceived volume before deciding whether the processing is genuinely helping.

Using THEDI on Electric Guitar

Electric guitar recordings made through an audio interface often begin with a very clean DI signal. This is useful for reamping, but the untreated sound may feel somewhat flat before reaching the virtual amplifier.

Placing THEDI before an amp simulator can introduce additional tonal character at the beginning of the chain. This can affect the way the virtual amplifier responds, particularly when using cleaner or lightly driven tones.

The Mix control is useful when the complete effect feels too pronounced. Blending some of the original signal back in can preserve pick attack while retaining the added coloration.

Other Production Uses

Synth bass: Add definition and presence to a soft or overly rounded bass patch.

Drum room tracks: Try subtle parallel coloration to bring more midrange energy into the room sound.

Electric piano: Introduce a slightly more forward tone before chorus, delay or reverb.

Loops and samples: Use THEDI as a quick tonal enhancer when a sample feels clean but lacks personality.

Parallel processing: Reduce the Mix control to retain the original transients while adding a smaller amount of circuit-style coloration.

No Oversampling, but Lightweight Anti-Aliasing

Analog Obsession states that THEDI does not use oversampling. Instead, the plugin includes a lightweight anti-aliasing system.

This approach is intended to keep processing relatively efficient. Producers can therefore test the plugin across several tracks without automatically introducing the additional CPU load associated with higher oversampling settings.

Mixing reminder: Tonal coloration is most useful when it improves the role of the track inside the arrangement. Louder almost always sounds more impressive for several seconds, which is why gain matching remains the least glamorous superhero in audio production.

Resizable Interface

The THEDI interface can be resized between 50% and 200% using the handle in the lower-right corner.

Analog Obsession recommends resizing the plugin before changing its parameters, then saving that configuration as the default preset inside the DAW. This allows future instances to open at the preferred size.

Double-clicking the resize handle returns the interface to its original dimensions.

How to Download THEDI

THEDI is distributed from the official Analog Obsession Patreon page. Mac users receive an installer, while Windows users can choose between an installer and a ZIP archive for manual installation.

  1. Open the official THEDI Patreon post.
  2. Sign in to Patreon if requested.
  3. Choose the Mac installer, Windows installer or Windows ZIP archive.
  4. Install or copy the plugin into the appropriate system folder.
  5. Open the DAW and rescan the plugin folders if THEDI does not appear automatically.

Final Verdict

THEDI is a focused free plugin for producers who want to add DI-style coloration without loading a complete channel strip or amplifier suite.

Its three-control interface keeps the workflow direct, while the Mix control makes it possible to move from subtle parallel enhancement to the full processed sound.

The plugin is especially relevant for bass and electric guitar DI recordings, but it can also be tested on synthesizers, drum tracks and samples that need additional tonal character.

THEDI will not replace careful recording, EQ or amplifier selection. It simply gives clean signals a little more attitude before the rest of the plugin chain begins negotiating custody of the frequencies.
