Body is a free dynamics plugin developed by Playfair Audio for producers and engineers who want to add weight, density and presence without configuring a conventional compressor. Released in 2025, it uses the same core DSP engine and Source Learn technology as Playfair Audio’s commercial Dynamic Grading processor, but presents the concept through a deliberately simplified interface.
Body is free to use permanently and has no copy protection. Producers must subscribe to the Playfair Audio newsletter with a valid email address, after which the macOS and Windows download links are delivered automatically. It is a complete plugin rather than a temporary trial of Dynamic Grading.
What Is Body?
Body is based on a different approach to dynamics processing. Traditional compressors normally react when the signal crosses a single threshold. Body instead focuses on the central area of the signal’s dynamic distribution, which Playfair Audio calls the body range.

How Source Learn Works
Body analyzes how frequently different signal levels occur and displays that information through its histogram-style interface. Unlike a spectrum analyzer, which shows frequency content, these histograms represent the distribution of the signal’s dynamics.
Clicking Source Learn allows the plugin to examine the incoming audio and position the body range automatically. This removes much of the initial threshold setup and provides a useful starting point for the selected track.
After the analysis, turn the Body control in one direction to compress the central dynamic range or in the opposite direction to expand it. The Gain control can then be used to match the processed output with the original level.
Best Uses
Body is particularly useful on drums, basses, vocals, guitars, pianos and complete buses. On a drum bus, moderate body compression can increase density without directly flattening every transient. Expansion can create more contrast inside percussion or room recordings.
On vocals, Body can reinforce the main energy of the performance and help it remain present in a dense arrangement. It should not automatically replace a traditional vocal compressor, but it can provide a different type of control when conventional compression makes the performance feel overly restricted.
Bass guitars and synthesizer basses can gain additional weight, especially when the note sustains feel inconsistent. On guitars, keys and strings, subtle processing can improve presence without making the attacks unnecessarily aggressive.
The plugin can also be placed on a mix bus or stem when an arrangement needs more density. In this situation, small adjustments are usually more effective than extreme ratios.
Production Tips
Begin by playing a representative section of the track and activating Source Learn. A complete chorus or busy verse will usually provide a more useful analysis than a short isolated hit.
Adjust the Body control while listening to the complete mix. A setting that sounds impressive in solo may make the instrument occupy too much space once vocals, drums and bass are playing together.
Use the Gain control to compare the processed and bypassed signals at a similar loudness. Otherwise, the louder version may appear better simply because it has more level. Ears are excellent instruments, but they remain surprisingly easy to flatter.
For drum buses, stop increasing the amount when transients begin to lose definition. On vocals and melodic instruments, listen for unwanted changes in articulation and sustain. Body is intended to make dynamics easier to shape, not to remove them entirely.

Body is available for 64-bit macOS and Windows systems. Playfair Audio supports Audio Units, VST3 and AAX on macOS, while Windows users receive VST3 and AAX versions.
The published minimum requirements are macOS 10.13 or later or Windows 10 or later, with a 2 GHz processor and 4 GB of RAM. Apple Silicon is supported.
The download requires newsletter registration and is delivered by email. Body itself uses no copy protection and does not require an iLok activation.

Playfair Audio provides a personal, non-exclusive licence to use the software. The plugin may not be copied, modified, reverse engineered, resold or redistributed.
