Spotify Running Mode Comes to Android With AI-Powered Workout Playlists

Spotify has expanded its new Running Mode to Android, extending the AI-powered workout feature beyond its initial iOS launch and turning music streaming into a more personalized fitness tool.

Spotify is moving deeper into fitness, and Android users are now part of the experiment.

Running Mode, first launched for Premium users on iOS at the end of July, is now available on Android in the same initial group of markets: the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Sweden.

Key Facts

  • Spotify Running Mode is now available on Android.
  • The feature requires Spotify Premium.
  • It is currently available in seven markets: U.S., Canada, U.K., Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Sweden.
  • Users can customize workout type, duration, BPM and music preferences.
  • Running Mode can generate playlists for interval, steady and pyramid-style sessions.
  • Optional English-language audio coaching can guide different stages of a run.

Spotify Wants to Build the Playlist Around the Workout

Running Mode reverses the usual relationship between music and exercise. Instead of selecting an existing playlist and hoping its energy fits the run, the user defines the workout first.

Spotify then builds the listening session around those instructions. Premium subscribers can select from 25 starting presets and customize factors such as session length, workout structure, desired beats per minute and music style.

The goal is to reduce the amount of manual playlist searching before a run and make the soundtrack feel more synchronized with the training plan.

It Uses Spotify’s Growing AI Personalization Stack

Spotify says the feature grew out of the way people were already using Prompted Playlists for fitness. Running Mode applies similar personalization logic in a more structured format.

The system combines workout instructions with the listener’s music taste and selected tempo. Rather than simply playing a static BPM playlist, it can shape the session around phases of the run and offer smoother transitions between tracks.

That makes Running Mode part of Spotify’s broader strategy of using AI to turn listening from a passive catalog experience into something more conversational and situational.

Audiartist Analysis

Running Mode matters less as a fitness novelty than as a product signal. Spotify is increasingly designing listening around intent: running, studying, discovering, asking questions or remixing. The playlist is becoming an interface generated around what the user is trying to do.

Android Expansion Makes the Feature Much More Relevant

The original July launch was limited to iOS, which meant a large part of Spotify’s mobile audience could not test it.

The Android rollout changes that. It puts the same feature in front of users across both major smartphone platforms in the supported countries.

The geographic restriction remains important, however. Running Mode is not yet a global feature, and availability outside the seven launch markets has not been broadly announced.

Audio Coaching Pushes Spotify Beyond Music Selection

Running Mode can also include optional English-language audio cues that guide the workout.

That makes the experience closer to a lightweight coaching app than a normal playlist. Music remains the central product, but spoken prompts can help users move between stages of an interval session or stay engaged during longer runs.

Spotify has described the cues as motivational guidance that should support the workout without interrupting the music.

Spotify Is Building a Fitness Ecosystem

Running Mode did not appear in isolation. Spotify has been expanding its Fitness hub and adding workout content, including a partnership with Peloton and creator-led fitness video.

Company executives have described fitness as a natural extension of how people already use Spotify. Music has always been part of running, gym sessions and training routines, so the platform is trying to capture more of that experience inside its own app.

This strategy also creates another reason for users to stay inside Spotify instead of moving between a music app, coaching app and workout platform.

The Feature Arrives as Spotify Passes 300 Million Premium Subscribers

The timing is commercially useful. Spotify recently reported more than 300 million Premium subscribers and 777 million monthly active users.

At that scale, even a feature used by a small percentage of subscribers can become a major product category.

Fitness also gives Spotify a way to add perceived value to Premium without relying only on catalog expansion or audio quality improvements.

Running Mode Is Different From Spotify’s Old Running Feature

Longtime users may remember that Spotify previously offered a running feature years ago. The older version focused more heavily on detecting a runner’s cadence through phone hardware and matching songs automatically.

The new Running Mode is more intentional. Users define the session, tempo and style in advance, giving Spotify a clearer set of instructions to work from.

That reflects a broader change in personalization technology: instead of only observing behavior, platforms increasingly ask users to state what they want and generate the experience around it.

What This Means for Artists

For artists and labels, fitness personalization creates another discovery context. A track may be recommended not only because it resembles something a listener already likes, but because its energy, tempo and structure fit a specific workout.

That makes metadata and audio characteristics increasingly important. BPM, mood, genre and listener behavior can all influence where a song appears in context-driven recommendations.

Spotify Is Becoming More Context-Aware

Running Mode joins Prompted Playlists, conversational discovery and other AI features that respond to what a listener is doing or asking for at a particular moment.

The streaming battle is therefore moving beyond who has the biggest catalog. Every major service has access to most commercially released music. The competitive advantage increasingly comes from how intelligently that catalog is organized around the user.

With Running Mode now on Android, Spotify is taking another step toward making the soundtrack itself adapt to the activity rather than asking the listener to adapt to the playlist.
