VEIL: A Free De-Esser VST3 for Cleaner Vocals
A focused vocal processor designed to control harsh sibilance without unnecessarily dulling the rest of the voice.
VEIL by Ghostnote Supply is a completely free de-esser plugin designed for vocal production, mixing and recording.
Unlike a limited demo or stripped-down free edition, VEIL provides the complete feature set without a subscription, license key, iLok account or activation system.
The plugin focuses on one job: reducing excessive « S », « SH » and « TS » sounds while preserving as much of the main vocal tone as possible.

Split-Band De-Essing
VEIL uses a split-band architecture rather than reducing the level of the complete vocal every time sibilance appears.
The plugin isolates the higher-frequency area responsible for harsh consonants and applies gain reduction only to that part of the signal.
This approach is designed to help maintain the weight, warmth and presence of the main vocal while controlling excessive top-end energy.
Simple Controls, Fast Workflow
Ghostnote has deliberately kept the interface compact. The main parameters include Sense, Crossover, Range and Release, making VEIL easy to adjust without navigating multiple pages or advanced menus.
The Sense control determines how strongly the detector reacts, while Crossover defines the frequency region being treated. Range controls the maximum amount of attenuation and Release determines how quickly the processing returns to normal after a sibilant sound.
The result is a workflow that should feel familiar to producers who want to fix a vocal quickly and continue mixing.
Level-Independent Detection
One of VEIL’s more interesting design choices is its level-independent detection system.
Instead of responding only to a fixed signal level, the detector analyzes sibilance relative to the vocal itself. This is intended to make the same setting more consistent when a singer moves between quieter and louder phrases.
That can be especially useful on dynamic vocal performances where traditional threshold-based processing may require more automation or manual adjustment.
3 ms Lookahead
VEIL uses 3 milliseconds of lookahead so that gain reduction can begin just before the detected sibilant transient reaches the output.
This helps the processor catch the beginning of sharp consonants rather than reacting only after the harshest part has already passed.
The plugin reports its latency to the host, allowing compatible DAWs to compensate automatically during playback and mixing.
Hear Exactly What Is Being Removed
A particularly useful feature is the Removed listening mode.
Instead of hearing the processed vocal, this mode lets you monitor only the material being removed by the de-esser.
Ideally, you should mainly hear harsh consonants. If complete words or too much vocal tone become audible, the processing is probably too aggressive.
This makes the feature useful both for experienced engineers and producers who are still learning how much de-essing is actually necessary.

Where to Place VEIL in a Vocal Chain
VEIL can be used wherever problematic sibilance needs to be controlled, but it makes particular sense after the main tonal and dynamic processing stages of a vocal chain.
For rap, pop and modern vocal production, it can help manage the extra high-frequency aggression that sometimes becomes more obvious after compression or saturation.
The plugin can also be used on backing vocals, spoken-word recordings, podcasts and other sources where sharp consonants need more control.

Final Thoughts
VEIL keeps the concept simple: identify vocal sibilance, reduce only the problematic frequency region and make it easy to hear when the processing has gone too far. The split-band design, lookahead processing and Removed monitoring mode give producers enough control for serious vocal work without turning a straightforward task into a science project. For a completely free VST3 de-esser, it is a practical addition to a vocal mixing toolkit.
